Meet Kelly

When we pull a dog from a county shelter that was surrendered by its owner, we know that he/she probably won't be altered and may have fleas, intestinal parasites, or both. And, more often than not, if it's a long-haired dog, it will probably need to be groomed. But poor little Kelly was in even worse shape than usual. The coat of this little Dachshund/Poodle mix was nothing but hard mats that were embedded with dried and wet feces. No telling how long this poor little dog had been suffering but it would have taken months for her coat to get into such terrible condition. Our hearts immediately went out to Kelly and we knew she was going to need to be sedated to rid her of her mats. Because she was also suffering from dehydration, we knew she would require medical attention, too, as quickly as possible. Kelly spent 4 days at the vet - three of those days she was on IV fluids to treat severe dehydration - and had to be sedated in order for them to shave her down and relieve her discomfort. Despite the poor treatment she'd received from humans in the past, Kelly isn't holding a grudge and is just a super sweet little gal. She can sometimes take a minute or two to come up to you but give her that time and you'll be rewarded by her crawling into your lap and giving you tender little 'kisses.' We don't know if Kelly is house-trained but she does a very good job of using the newspaper in her kennel if she has to go potty when she's inside. We also don't know yet how she is with children, cats, or dogs (other than the ones she came in with). Because Kelly only weighs 6-lbs and is fully-grown, she wouldn't be a good choice for households where young children live or frequently visit. It wouldn't take much of a 'hug' or very high of a fall from being accidentally dropped for Kelly to be hurt. If you have experience with Dachshunds or have done your research on the breed, Kelly may be the canine companion you've been searching for. To find out if she would be a good fit for you and your household, just stop by the shelter and ask to spend some time with her. Primary Color: Charcoal Weight: 6.6 Animal has been Spayed I am available for adoption at the Animal Care Society.
