JACKSON IS A SILKY TERRIER!

4/29/16 - Jackson has been in his foster home for a while, but because of his skin infections and his bladder infection which were present when he came to YHR, he did not feel well for quite a while. Now he feels great and his true personality is starting to shine.

He loves walks, car rides, and being the center of attention; so he would do best in a quiet home with a single, retired individual or couple, or an adopter who works from home. He is not a lap dog; he will sit next to you on the couch, or at your feet, if you are reading or watching TV. He asks for a belly rub several times a day and really enjoys the contact. Every night he watches the news alone with foster mom; they play fetch or he chews on his nylon bone while sitting on the couch or sometimes he just naps beside her for 30 minutes. Jackson walks several miles a day; now that it is warm weather, he takes his walk early in the morning, after breakfast, and then he takes a long nap.

Jackson is making strides in adjusting to a loving home environment. A neighbor nearby to his foster home has allowed Jackson to spend time with her and her husband for the last several months. Jackson loves to visit the neighbor's house; he is the only dog and gets all the attention; unfortunately, they are not able to adopt him. The visits to the neighbor's house showed foster mom that Jackson is comfortable around men and that he wants to be the only dog in the home.

Jackson loves to ride in the car; so if his adopters like to travel, he will be a great travel companion; once he is in the car, he settles down and only looks outside when the car stops. Any adopters out there who have a motor home that need a dog to travel with them? Jackson has a nylon bone and will travel!

He tells time very well; if he thinks foster mom should be getting a meal ready for him, he will let her know. He is also very aware of the treat container; he suddenly appears when it is opened. He is an excellent kitchen assistant, watching all food prep, just in case foster mom needs some direction.

Jackson has a strong personality, which is true to the breed; he can be persuaded to do the things foster mom wants, but sometimes a treat is involved. He is independent and will spend time alone each day; he is not a dog that needs or wants constant attention. He may sit under the desk while you work at your desk, or he may go into another room to be alone. He also wants to be left alone to enjoy his food twice a day and he will always come to get a treat. He likes to play tug of war and fetch and will pick out a toy and bring it to you to play; after some play, he will settle down to relax. He gets excited every day when his leash appears and he gets to take his walk. Jackson is a very good dog.

2/9/16 - Jackson has come a long way in the few months that he has been with foster mom. He arrived afraid of almost everything. He has learned that hands do not hit him; at first he was always afraid of being hit and he would snap at foster mom because he was so afraid. He continues to learn about the good things that exist in a loving home.

He is very smart and learns quickly. He is still anxious about new things and it takes patience to show him that he will be okay when new things occur. He has the strong Silky personality so he will need adopters who will take charge and make sure that he follows the rules of good behavior. Once he learns what is expected of him, he will follow the rules.

Jackson was worried about food when he arrived; he probably did not eat well; so any food that he received he considered that it might be his last meal for a while so he wolfed it down and made sure that the other dogs in the house never got near his bowl even once it was empty. He would not let foster mom near his empty food bowl at first; now he knows there will be food three times a day. He has also learned that to get his food he must sit, stay and then he gets the "okay" to eat.

Jackson still has moments when he reverts to his old behavior and does not trust, so he needs adopters who will be willing to work through his problems with him. He does not like lots of activity or lots of noise and when the other dogs in the house get rowdy he will go into another room. His forever home will need to have a quiet spot for him to go when things get to be too much for him. He loves to sit with foster mom if the other dogs are upstairs and it is just the two of them. He will play fetch with her and then settle down for a nap while she works on the computer.

If you are willing to give Jackson the love and patience that he needs, he will forget all those bad days when he suffered and was afraid. He will become a most loyal and loving companion for life. He wants to please and to be a good dog; it is just that the scary memories have not yet been replaced with good ones. Jackson needs to feel love and to feel secure so that he can live the rest of his life happy and free from his past.

11/8/15 - Jackson continues to learn new things every day. He now sleeps in the big bed with foster mom and the other dogs. He has his spot and when it is time for bed all foster mom has to say is "go to your spot, time for bed" and he climbs the bed stairs and settles down. He LOVES to play tug of war and brings foster mom a toy to tug on many times a day; if she is busy he goes and plays with it by himself. He will play tug of war with the other dogs and one of them always steals it from him which is okay with him.

He loves to go on a walk and will greet every neighbor that we see and ask for for them to pet him. If foster mom starts talking with the neighbor, he will lies down and waits politely until the conversation is finished. He follows directions well and remembers when he has been told not to do something. He is a very loving dog and always enjoys being petted; his most favorite thing is a belly rub. Jackson will stay in your arms for a belly rub for as long as you want to rub him!

He has lots of energy and will find a nylon bone to chew on if nothing else is going on.

9/23/15 - Jackson came to Yorkie Haven with major health issues. His skin, eyes, ears and feet were full of bacteria including yeast and staph. Sometimes pet owners' lives get complicated and they may not have the resources to devote to their animals any longer. In this case, Jackson was surrendered to us, and we were able to get him the help he needed for his health problems. He likes to stick his head under the bed and will stay in a closet without barking if he gets accidentally closed up in one. Jackson thinks of this type of space as a place of safety, so he may have spent long hours in a cage.

Jackson will wag his tail when foster mom calls him; he gets healthier every day, both mentally and physically. He has a sweet nature and foster mom has taught him that there are soft beds to sleep in, regular meals and a yard to play in. He has a lot to learn; he is smart and learns quickly. He will sit when his food bowl is brought to him and when he is offered a treat. He sleeps in a dog bed beside foster mom's bed. He will get on the big bed, but when it is time for sleep, he likes his own bed. Jackson will bark when it is time for a meal; he wants to make sure that he gets his bowl of food.

He is learning to walk on a leash and will poop and pee outside now. He likes to greet other dogs while out walking and he especially likes to greet the larger dogs. He goes out in the yard with the other smaller dogs, but has yet to do much exploring on his own.

Jackson, like all Silky Terriers, has a strong personality. He needs owners who will take charge and make sure that they are consistent with his training. He loves to chew on his soft, nylon bone and is rarely without one in his mouth; foster mom often goes to sleep to the sound of him chewing on his bone. Jackson has learned to play tug of war with a toy as well as fetch. He has started to investigate balls and to play with them. He enjoys life more each day.

He does not like lots of chaos; when the other dogs in the house start barking, he can get annoyed with all the noise; so foster mom thinks that he would do best in a home without children. He likes to get lots of attention; he may have had very little in his former home. He needs to have adopters who are at home a good portion of the day. Foster mom will continue to test Jackson with different types of dogs to determine what will be the most appropriate for him. Another quiet dog in the home would seem to be something he would like. He may start to play with another dog, but we are not sure about that at this time.

Jackson has just started to appreciate belly rubs and now asks for one frequently. He needs a lot of love and attention so he can realize what a special boy he is.
