Meet ADOPTED!! (TONY)

YO, TONY! Tony is about 2 years old and is a pit bull terrier (mostly). He is extremely top heavy, as he is all wiry muscle in the back and gigantic head in the front! We are always amazed he doesn't trip over his own face when he is out playing.

And "playing" is what Tony loves to do! He'll play ball, he'll play with other dogs and if neither of those things are available he will find a toy and play all by himself. He is a very good natured guy with a smile for everyone, and a high tolerance level for all kinds of unpleasant things. Poor Tony has some food allergies, so he had a badly infected ear that we had to clean out pretty routinely and even though it must have been painful, inflamed as it were, he was so patient with us. And when his friend Athena hangs off his painful ear, he tolerates that too!

Tony and Athena are hilarious to watch because Athena does everything in her power to annoy Tony - she bites his ankles, runs underneath him when he is galloping by, hops on his back and grabs at his ears and neck, or tries to steal the toys out of his mouth. Tony tolerates it all, shaking her off when she gets too pesty, ignoring her otherwise until she is more civil about playing. When we introduced Tony to an angry male dog, he did everything in his power to elicit play and tried to convince the other dog he was not interested in arguing. He's well versed in canine social skills and deportment!

HOWEVER - and it's a big however - Tony's social skills go to poop when there are toys in the mix. Tony.Loves.His.Toys. He loves his toys so much that he gets a kind of tunnel visioned love affair going on and he abandons all his previous friendliness to other dogs. He doesn't like to share and while he doesn't go out of his way to be a jerk about his "stuff" if another dog pesters or bothers him while he is gnawing on a beloved toy, he will tell them off in a big way. Management must be exercised around toys - or better yet, he should not have access to them at all except in controlled circumstances and not around other dogs.

Also, during his stay at SARC Tony actually ate a toy we thought would be Tony-proof. Fortunately he passed all the pieces, but he was not feeling very well for a few days. He can never have toys unattended in his kennel (or in the home).

All in all, Tony is just a plain old nice dog. His new home will have to do some trial and error to make sure his diet is something he can tolerate, but we have seen much worse allergies than Tony's. On a quality diet and with regular and routine exercise, Tony is a big couch potato, ready for a snuggle in front of the TV. We tested him with cats and it did NOT go well, so he cannot live with cats. We suspect he'd be fine with kids, other than maybe accidentally knocking them over sometimes.

If the big headed meat man is your cup of tea, you'll have to fill out an application before we can introduce you. You can pick up one up in person between 11AM and 5:30PM any day of the week, or you can request one from adoption@surrey.ca
