Meet Ralphie
Ralphie is a beautiful, red-lored Amazon, approximately 4 years old. He was originally part of a wild flock in the Los Angeles area, until, at about one year of age, he was hit by a car, resulting in a shattered leg and burst air sacs. Someone took him to an animal shelter in Downey, where he was about to be euthanized, when he was discovered there by a woman from the House Rabbit Society. She convinced the personnel at the shelter to relinquish him to her and she then contacted PEAC.
A PEAC member took Ralphie to an avian vet on New Year’s Day, 2012, and he underwent emergency surgery for his leg. He made a full recovery and shows no sign of injury.
When Ralphie first went to his new foster home he was terrified of people and would hiss and growl when his foster mom entered the room. However, with positive reinforcement, it was only a matter of weeks before he was stepping up on a stick.
Ralphie now says “Hello” very clearly and has a distinctive wolf whistle. He loves music, including being sung to, and “sings” along in a soft voice. His favorite musical shows are Lawrence Welk reruns, folk and celtic music. His favorite toys are ones that have thin pieces of wood to destroy, and he also loves his stainless steel bells. He spends part of each day in his outdoor aviary where he sits on his swing and rings the bells hanging from the top. He understands “dinner time” and “time to go night-night,” at which time he climbs into his cage on his own and receives a treat.
Ralphie is now in the preliminary stages of learning to step up on a hand. He has never bitten his foster mom, which is pretty amazing, considering that he was once a “wild” parrot. Ralphie is a wonderful Amazon who is looking for his forever home.
