Meet Sammie ~ CGC
5/16/09 Adopted by Forbes, Tina
Shea -- now called Sammie -- was returned by her previous owners, so the handlers have freshened up her training and Sammie is SO READY for her forever home. She's well-behaved and very devoted.
Sammie is a 2 year old, 30 lb. sheltie/hound who is confident and curious about everything. Her favorite games are chase, fetch a ball, and tug of war. She is friendly with people and enjoys children, too.
Sammie has played nicely with 10 other dogs in our program, but she has been a little snarky at first with a couple new dogs upon first meeting. (Now that she has a fluent 'leave it' cue, she will immediately turn away from another dog when asked.) If another dog calmly weathers the initial nonsense, she usually becomes friends thereafter. With many dogs she'll meet with a friendly demeanor right away. If a potential adopter already has a dog, we'd want to be sure they got along really well.
Sammie is one of the brightest dogs we've had in our program. She passed her CGC test early on. This is a dog who clearly enjoys the mental challenge of training, and who thrives under the guidance of a consistent leader. In addition to her basic obedience skills, she is crate- and house-trained, and knows some great tricks, including say your prayers, show me your best side, shake, high-five, circle left and right, chill out, and dance!
* * 4/3 update: Sammie is so sharp on all her obedience skills, including coming out of dog play whenever she is called. She also has a fluent 'leave it' cue, easily ignoring other dogs (even her best buddies) or tempting bits of meat on the floor. She's very devoted to her handler and will calmly hang out with her at every opportunity. When it's time to play, she's always ready for fun, too. Truly, this is a wonderful dog! * *
Sammie would be a great pet for a family who has a fenced yard for her to run and play. (We have learned she can get over lower fences, but this may be when she was left alone for periods of time outside in her prior home.)
Sammie is receiving her obedience training at a Virginia correctional center. If you would like to learn more about the SOS Pen Pals program please visit our website at www.sos-penpals.com
