The mission of Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary is to provide a home for old dogs in KC area shelters and rescues who have been unable to find an adoptive family. The dogs live freely together in a house, where they can wander, play, or hang out with caring volunteers. The dogs are free to remain forever, but are available for adoption to good homes. We are a 501(c)(3) run completely by volunteers. We opened in April of 2019.
As a Sanctuary, adoptions are not our primary mission; the dogs are welcome to stay forever. But if a person or family comes along that is a good fit, and we believe that the dog would be better off with them, then we are certainly open to adopting them out. We require that a potential adopter fill out an application, meet the dog at our facility, and submit to a home visit. If that goes well, there is a two-week trial foster period, which either side can cancel. Hopefully at the end, our dog will be happy in its new home!
