Our Mission

Defenders of Animal Rights, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating cruelty to all animals. In 1988, our shelter opened in the middle of a 35.8 acre wildlife sanctuary in Northern Baltimore County, where we've been operating since. We are dedicated to providing the best care for companion animals both in the shelter and after they have been adopted.

Adoption Policy

Our adoption fee is $100 per dog or cat. This includes a $30 medical coverage guarantee and ensures health checks are up to date. If you are a renter, we require a copy of your lease and an addendum stating that pets are allowed at your living situation PRIOR to adoption. If the pet policy has certain restrictions such as weight, breed, or type of animal, we may require you to get written approval from your landlord before we can adopt to you. We may require every member of the household to meet the animal prior to adoption. For dogs, we require them to meet other dogs in the household before they go home.
