Our Mission
At Four Feet and a Heartbeat (formerly CARES K9 Country Orphanage), our mission is to connect adoptable dogs—many at high risk of euthanasia—with the loving, permanent homes they deserve.
As a no-kill dog rescue based in Lacombe, Alberta and serving Western Canada, we’ve spent over 30 years providing a safe haven for dogs in need. We partner with animal shelters, municipal organizations, and rescue networks to ensure that every dog we welcome receives veterinary care, compassion, and the time they need to find their forever family.
By promoting adoption and placing spayed/neutered dogs into homes across the region, we help reduce the overpopulation of companion animals while offering an ethical, heart-forward alternative to buying from breeders.
Because every dog deserves a second chance—and we’re here for them until they get it.
Adoption Policy
At Four Feet and a Heartbeat, our goal is to ensure every dog is placed in a safe, loving, and well-matched home. As a no-kill dog rescue based in Lacombe, Alberta and serving Western Canada, we take responsible placement seriously—without making the process overly complicated.
Before reaching out, please review the following policies:
- Adopters must be 18 years of age or older.
- We adopt primarily to Alberta and neighboring provinces, though out-of-province adoptions may be possible if transportation is arranged and paid for by the adopter.
- A pet-safe home is required. Some dogs may need 6-foot fencing based on observed behavior (e.g. climbing, prey drive, etc).
- Our adoptable dogs are spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated (5-way, Rabies, and Kennel Cough).
- We do not adopt dogs for breeding, resale, or as gifts.
- Adoption fees vary by dog and help cover food, shelter medical care and ongoing support.
We rely on self-selection to help identify the right matches and ask that prospective adopters review the adoption agreement and dog bios before contacting us.
