Popcorn's Story
Popcorn is the CUTEST pony you will ever meet and she can't wait to join your family! She likes kids and loves being brushed.

POPCORN'S BACKGROUND

Before coming to SKE, Popcorn had a single home from the time she was a filly. In that home, she learned the basics of R+ training and became familiar and comfortable with people.

Popcorn also briefly lived with a traditional equine trainer, who used harsh, force-based methods with her.

POPCORN'S TRAINING

Popcorn done an excellent job sailing through our "life skills" checklist since arriving at SKE! Her education has been 100% R+ (clicker training, fear-free/force-free) since arrival. Her list of behaviors includes:

- Haltering
- Leading (with halter, off a target, or off body language/at liberty)
- Nose targeting (target stick & hand targets)
- Stationary targeting (at a cone, mat, or bucket)
- Body handling (for brushes, petting, vet, etc.)

- Veterinary handling (checking eyes, ears, nose, teeth/mouth, teats, etc.)
- Cooperative injections (IV & IM)
- Cooperative oral medications (via syringe, though she will also eat medications mixed into food)
- Cooperative eye drops/ointments
- Cooperative aerosol spray (like aluminum spray / aluspray)
- Cooperative fly spray
- Trailer loading (both ramp & step up; turning to walk off & backing off)

Popcorn is very kind and willing. When scared, she tends to "retreat inward" rather than "exploding outward." Her time with the traditional trainer made her weary of strangers, but she has largely overcome that and now sees anyone with a reinforcement pouch as a friend!

Popcorn has done very well with some casual introductions to equine agility obstacles and tends to be more curious than afraid!

Popcorn is just now reaching the age where her growth plates are closing and she is about ready to carry rider weight! Thanks to waiting to start her at an appropriate age, she should stay healthy & strong during a long riding career.

The traditional trainer from her past worked primarily on tacking using force & punishment-based methods, but thanks to trauma-informed R+ work, she is already gaining more comfort with the saddle and girth! She seems very happy with the idea of lining up at the mounting block, having us lean over her back, and other pre-riding foundations, so we anticipate she will be very happy with riding!

POPCORN'S HEALTH HISTORY

Popcorn was born in 2019, making her 5 years old (turning 6 summer of 2025). She is approx. 14.1 hh tall with a petite build. She should be okay to carry small riders and youths for high-impact/performance work, or average sized adults for casual/infrequent rides. She is too small to carry larger adult riders.

Popcorn is an easy, easy keeper! She does not require any special supplementation nor grain. She has a LOT of gorgeous mane and a shiny, golden coat.

Popcorn has healthy, strong barefoot hooves. Living in an enriched pasture with varied terrain, she tends to “self trim” well enough that she needs minimal human assistance. When she does get trims, she cooperates at liberty, using R+ and consent cues. It’s important to note that SKE does not train restraint-based farrier care, and so Popcorn has not been trained to respond to any forceful nor restraint-based handling, hoof care included. That said, she has been trimmed by traditional farriers in her previous home and did well.

Popcorn has not had any lameness issues, major health complications, nor other problems since her arrival at SKE.

HOW TO ADOPT POPCORN

SKE seeks adopters who have good intentions & good core values to direct them on their horsemanship journey - plus the knowledge, resources, & facilities to provide a great life to their adopted equine. If you feel that describes you, we would love for you to provide Popcorn with an amazing home!

Start the application process by filling the adoption application:
skequine.com/adopt

Contact SKE with any questions or concerns:
adopt@skequine.com

Popcorn is available for adoption through SKE for $2,500. This fee will increase when she is under saddle. She’s located in Willard, Missouri, USA and transportation is available in the US & most of Canada.

Thank you so much for considering Popcorn, she is certain to capture your heart and make her future family incredibly happy!
