Zoey's Story

Meet Zoey – A Survivor Ready for Her Forever Home

Zoey is an approximately 13-month-old, 21 pound sweetheart currently being fostered near Riverside, CA—and her journey is nothing short of incredible.

When FUR learned about Zoey, she was just a puppy sitting in a high-kill shelter, scheduled for euthanasia. She was suffering from severe generalized demodex mange and a painful skin infection that left 90% of her body without fur, covered in thick scabs. On top of that, she was battling a respiratory infection, internal parasites, malnutrition, and deep emotional shutdown.

But Zoey didn’t give up—and neither did we.

With dedicated medical care, medicated baths, proper nutrition, and lots of love, Zoey has made an amazing physical recovery. Now, she’s working just as hard on healing emotionally. Having likely spent her early life neglected and isolated, the world can still feel a little scary—but every day, Zoey gets braver.

In foster care, Zoey is discovering what it means to be a happy dog. She’s learned to enjoy toys of all sorts, cozy naps on the couch and bed, and the comfort of human companionship. Her absolute favorite thing? Playing with her Frenchie foster sibling! From wrestling and tug-of-war to her signature “bitey-face” play style, Zoey thrives with a fun, friendly canine companion and will need another playful dog or dogs in her forever home to help guide her and boost her confidence. Slow introductions are necessary so that Zoey feels safe and comfortable around new doggy companions.

Zoey has lived safely with several dog-savvy cats, but she thinks they’re her personal play toys—so a cat-free home would likely be best.

She is making good progress with potty training and has mastered using a doggy door, but like any young pup, she’ll need patience as she adjusts to a new routine. Zoey enjoys spending time outdoors in a secure yard, proudly “patrolling” for suspicious activity (bugs and sticks included!). She’s still learning about leashes and car rides, which can be scary for her, but with gentle encouragement and consistency, she should continue to improve.

Due to her past skin condition, Zoey will need ongoing care to keep her comfortable and healthy, including a nutritious diet, regular medicated baths, Cytopoint injections as needed, and monthly flea prevention. Her coat may never fully return to normal on her legs and sides, but her progress has already been nothing short of amazing.

Zoey’s foster mom suspects that she might have some Boston Terrier in her (hello, adorable Haggerty spot!), but her exact lineage is unknown. What we do know is that she’s 100% unique—with beautiful green eyes and a growing constellation of little brown freckle spots across her chest and belly that make her even more special.

Zoey would do best in a patient, loving home with a sense of humor—someone who understands that she’s still learning and is ready to continue her socialization journey. A home with one or more playful dogs will help her feel secure and bring out her best self. She has even met a toddler and handled the experience like a champ!

Zoey is an active, shy, sweet, and silly girl who just needs the right family to help her fully blossom.
