Zander's Story
Over 18 million dogs live on Mexico's streets. Yes

• GOOD WITH CATS? Yes

• GOOD WITH KIDS? Yes, but please keep in mind that they must be taught to respect the dog’s space, belongings, and food.

• HOUSEBROKEN? No, not 100% yet -- Please keep in mind that our dogs are rescued off the streets, they are NOT always 100% housebroken and will need time and patience to adjust. Even in a foster home in Mexico, the dogs are often living in an environment with no carpet or grass or living outside. In the house, it is usually tile flooring and outside it is dirt/concrete. Most of our dogs transition well and only need about 1-2 weeks to get on a potty schedule/routine.

• LOCATION: Currently in Guadalajara foster care. 2-4 weeks to arrange flight once adoption is approved

**Meet ZANDER**

We found him wandering the streets near the shores of Lake Chapala—a small, scrappy dog with the unmistakable alert ears and bright eyes of a Chihuahua mix. At roughly five years old, Xander had clearly been surviving on his own for who knows how long. When he first arrived at his foster home a month ago, he was a different dog entirely.

"He was very skittish, very traumatized," his foster dad recalls. "He wouldn't let anyone hug him, not even me at first. He definitely wouldn't let you touch his face."

**Walls Coming Down**

But something remarkable has been happening in these past weeks. The dog who once flinched at human touch now comes running happily across the patio when his foster dad steps outside. Where there was once fear, there's now trust building brick by careful brick.

"Now he lets me hug him, pet him, even touch his face," says his foster dad with visible pride. "He follows me around. He's losing that fear."

While he's made tremendous strides with adults, children still make him a bit nervous. "With kids, he's still a little cautious," his foster dad explains. "But he doesn't try to bite or attack. He just prefers not to be around children right now."

The transformation extends beyond just his relationship with people. Living alongside two cats and multiple dogs, Xander has revealed a gentle soul beneath that initial wariness. He doesn't start fights, doesn't chase the cats who roam freely around the yard, and seems genuinely content to coexist peacefully with his four-legged housemates.

**The Neighborhood Watch Captain**

If you want to know who Xander really is, look for him by the fence in the afternoon. This five-year-old has appointed himself the neighborhood's unofficial watch captain, spending hours perched by the mesh barrier, observing the world with keen interest.

"He's VERY nosy—he loves the gossip," his foster dad laughs. "When people walk by, he gets their attention. He sits there by the fence, peeking out, watching everyone pass, seeing what they’re up to."

It's this curiosity that makes their walks so special. On leash, Xander is well-behaved and doesn't try to escape, though his attention definitely perks up when he spots other dogs. Take him up to the hills where the grass grows tall, and he transforms into a little explorer, disappearing into the green waves until only the moving stalks give away his location.

"He loves when I take him walking on the trails, up to the hills. He has so much energy still. He gets curious about new sounds, new things—he wants to explore everything."

**Your Perfect Adventure Buddy**

Xander would thrive in a home where he can continue building confidence at his own pace, perhaps with other calm dogs who can show him the ropes. A secure yard where he can indulge his love of people-watching would be paradise, and regular walks to satisfy that explorer's spirit would keep him happy and healthy.
"He's changing so much, all for the better," his foster dad reflects. "No attacks, no aggression, no problems. He's just peaceful."

Xander is ready to write the next chapter of his story. He's proven he can overcome trauma, learn to trust again, and find joy in simple pleasures like a good walk or an afternoon spent watching the world go by. Now he needs someone who sees the remarkable dog he's becoming and wants to be part of that beautiful transformation.

Are you ready to be the happy ending to Xander's street-to-home story?

***************************************

READY TO APPLY?
