Zachariah (MR26-133)'s Story

Zachariah is a 4-year-old dachshund mix weighing 7 lbs, with a gentle and sensitive personality. He enjoys the company of other dogs and continues to build confidence through positive social interactions, where he is learning appropriate social cues.

Zachariah may be a bit shy at first and will do best in a home with another confident dog to help guide him and provide reassurance as he adjusts. He is still learning to trust people and will need a committed adopter who is willing to go slow, build a strong bond, and help him feel safe through consistent, positive experiences. Multiple meet and greets at the shelter will be required to ensure the best fit for both Zachariah and his future family. We want to make sure that both Zachariah and his adopters feel comfortable with one another and that the transition into a new home is a positive experience for everyone involved.

Zachariah can be a little sensitive with handling right now as he learns that people can be safe and predictable. He is making great progress, and our behavior team would love to talk more about the support and guidance that will help him continue to thrive. He will do best with a calm, patient adopter-ideally someone experienced with shy or undersocialized dogs-who understands the importance of respecting his boundaries and moving at his pace.

Zachariah will need a securely fenced-in yard where he can safely explore and continue building confidence.

With time, patience, and consistency, Zachariah has great potential to grow into a more confident and loving companion
------
Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Older kids are often a great fit for our dogs, and homes with younger children will be considered based on each dog's individual needs. Skills like house training and leash walking may take a little extra patience and practice. However, with understanding and a gentle hand, most of these dogs adapt quite quickly. Being a part of their rehabilitation is a truly rewarding experience. To learn more about mill dogs and start the adoption process, visit our website!
