Yoda's Story
The other day, someone came to Animal Aid looking for a smallish, older dog. Yoda happened to be outside and happily trotted over to introduce himself.
The person took one look at him and said, "Eww. Not him."
And Yoda just...deflated.
Maybe he understood the words, maybe he only understood the tone. But his head dropped, and he quietly walked away.
So, allow us to formally introduce "Eww. Not Him."
Yoda's a 9-year-old Beagle who was surrendered because there was "something wrong with his skin."
What was wrong? Fleas. Approximately all of them.
Yoda had been forced to live outside with such a horrific flea infestation that much of his hair fell out, his skin became thick and crusted, and he chewed himself so relentlessly trying to get relief that his teeth are worn almost down to nubs.
After just a few weeks of flea prevention, good food, clean bedding, and soapy baths, Yoda's skin is healing and his fur is growing back.
Even better, now that every waking moment isn't consumed by the desperate need to scratch himself, we're getting to meet the dog underneath all that misery.
And he's wonderful - sweet, affectionate, goofy. He adores people and loves soft, clean beds and blankets. The only thing he doesn't like is being alone.
Yoda concluded that he's spent quite enough time by himself, and would now like a person who understands that Beagles were not designed to suffer quietly in the backyard. They were designed to occupy the good blanket, follow you into the bathroom, and supervise sandwich preparation.
Yes, Yoda is still missing some fur. Yes, he has two tiny warts near his tush. No, at this particular moment in his life, he is not going to win Westminster.
But his coat will keep growing, and what's already completely intact is the important part: his enormous, tender, hopeful little heart.
Someday very soon, we want to watch Yoda trot up to someone and hear:
"Oh, him. Definitely him!"
Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily, including weekends & holidays.
Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!

PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.
