Xena's Story

Meet Xena!!!

**FOSTERED IN PANAMA CITY**

Xena is an energetic, 130 pound, almost 5 year-old female Great Dane with striking markings and an enthusiasm for life! She often shows that enthusiasm with pretty hefty playtime that includes bouncing around like a kangaroo. She is fostered as a lone dane in Panama City, Fl.

Xena came into rescue after surviving a heartbreaking backyard breeder/hoarding situation, where she and over a dozen other dogs were starved and neglected. Despite her rough start, she is incredibly affectionate and loyal. She is a shadow who will be your snuggle buddy no matter where you are so don’t expect to do anything alone, like ever. While she loves a good bed snuggle, she would be content with a couch or her own bed if those lines are clearly made.

She is housebroken and rock solid in that area. She lives in a home that has doggie doors but would rather wait for you to let her out. She will let you know when she wants to go out. It’s mostly subtle like standing in the direct eye line of a person watching tv or pacing back and forth from the door to you. She will occasionally counter surf when an enticing smell wafts her way but for the most part doesn’t care. She does also have a hit or miss when boxes are presented, it’s a thing but not always. She also loves to move shoes and socks around. She doesn’t eat them or chew on them, just carries them to another location when you’re gone.

Xena has good manners, she will sit and give her paw. She knows basic command such as NO, OFF, and COME. Leash training remains a work in progress but she has made improvements. She is great when people walk by but dogs are a whole other story, even those behind a fence. We are working on keeping her busy on walks to keep her focused, but her 130 pounds get rather insistent when other dogs are noticed. She will need a Halti/Gentle leader type device until you are comfortable with her walking.

Speaking of other animals. She formerly lived with a male Great Dane and they got along well and played very hard but she now lives as a single Dane. We believe she can live with another dog but is a diva and must be the queen of her land. Any other dogs in the home must be submissive and let her think she is in charge. Slow, proper introductions are a must! On walks, she doesn’t seem to care about our neighborhood cats and we have many. She has not been up close to any of them though so not fully tested.

This girl loves to play and plays very hard! She is mouthy and has no problem letting you know when she wants attention!

We do not believe Xena would do well in a home with younger smaller children but would probably be fine with older Dane savy kiddos!

Xena is such a great girl, she just needs the right home! She is waiting to find the perfect person or family that she can shower with all her attention.

She is spayed, microchipped, dewormed, and fully vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $350.

To apply to adopt Xena, please visit www.nwflgdr.com/adopt and carefully read the requirements before submitting an application.

Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters must pick up their new dog in person from the foster home, and if the sleepover trial doesn’t work out, the adopter is required to return the dog directly to the foster.

We allow exceptions in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet only. 2. All Dogs and outdoor Cats in your home MUST be current and have been kept historically up to date on annual vaccinations and monthly (or semiannual) heartworm and flea prevention. We will call your vet to verify this. We allow exceptions to this in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet, ONLY. 3. You must be a minimum of 21 years of age to adopt and be able to prove you're financially able to care for a great dane should a medical emergency arise. 4. You must own the property in which you live or your landlord must be willing to verify that you are allowed to have a Great Dane in your rental home. We check property records.? 5. Our Great Danes require a sturdy fenced in yard, particularly young or active danes. Generally, a six-foot or higher privacy fencing is preferred. In certain circumstances, the Board may waive this requirement depending upon the Dane's personality and temperament. Any such exceptions will solely be at the discretion of the Rescue Board. Under no circumstances will we consider invisible or electric fencing as acceptable. 6. We only adopt Dogs as indoor pets. We will not adopt Dogs to be used as guard dogs or to be kept out-of-doors. 7. A home visit is required for ALL adoptions, without exception. This is not a white-glove inspection, rather it is to ensure that the home is a safe environment for the Great Dane. 8. We do not transport. If you are applying from out of area or out of state, understand that if your application gets approved, you will be expected to pick up the dane in the location that he/she is being fostered. In addition, if the adoption does not work out, it is your responsibility to bring the dane safely back to us. 9. There may be multiple applications for the same Dog. Our Great Danes are placed in the home we believe most suitable for them, based upon their individual needs and temperament. 10. Before applying below, please expect this application process to take about two weeks. If you are applying from out of area or state, please expect a slight delay. It will take us more time to get the home visit set up. At any time, if you have questions about the status of your application, please email the rescue at nwflgdr@gmail.com.
