Winston's Story
Hi there... I'm Winston πΎπ€

I'm a 1-year-old, 65-pound Bernese Mountain Dog / Anatolian Shepherd mix with a beautiful tricolor coat and big, intelligent brown eyes. People say I look very wise for my age -- I think it's because I've had to grow up a little faster than most pups. When I was just a young pup, I was dumped and left to figure things out on my own. I scavenged, searched for food, and learned how to survive. Before I made my way to safety, I endured something no dog ever should -- I survived a gunshot wound to my neck. Somehow, I kept going. I kept trusting. I kept hoping. The shelter's primary veterinarian examined me and carefully removed the bullet, and I'm healing up very nicely now. My body may have a scar, but my heart is still gentle and full of love. π Sometimes I still get curious about trash cans... old habits from when I didn't know where my next meal would come from. But now that I'm fed regularly, and with a little training and guidance, I know I can leave that chapter behind. Especially if there's ham involved -- I really love ham. π₯π

My story started to change the day I wandered onto some farmland and met the sweetest older woman. She fed me and showed me kindness when I needed it most. Her grandkids absolutely adored me -- they would run and play with me every time they visited, and I loved every second of it. π She cared for me as best she could until the shelter had room, even though I was a bit too big for her to manage long-term. I've mostly been an outdoor dog and am used to having space to roam and stretch my legs. Big open areas make me feel comfortable and happy. I'm wonderful with children and gentle with large animals like horses and cows. I don't chase or hurt geese, and I even like cats. π΄ππ± I'm just a big softie at heart. Cars make me a little unsure right now, and I may need some tasty encouragement to load up. π I'm still learning that not every new thing is something to worry about. With patience, reassurance, and a few good snacks, I build confidence quickly.

What I really want now is stability. A place where I don't have to wonder where I belong. A yard to roam, people to protect and love, and maybe some kids to run beside me. I've survived on my own... but I'd much rather be someone's loyal companion. πΆπIf you think you might have room in your heart (and maybe your yard) for a handsome, gentle giant like me, please call the shelter at 479-394-5682 to find out more. I'll be waiting -- probably hoping you brought ham. π₯πΎ
****************
All animals at HSO are current on their vaccinations and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. If not already spayed/neutered, there may be a short delay between when you select this pet and when they are ready to go home.

Breed and age are determined based on observable physical traits. Actual lineage and birth date are rarely known.

Adoption Fees:
-$60 for cats
-$60 for dogs over 6 years
-$80 for dogs 6 months old to 6 years
-$100 for puppies up to 6 months

Come visit our pets Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-2pm.
