Winnie's Story

I am affectionately called the "the lioness" by some of the AGPR volunteers. My name is Winnie and I'm one tough girl. I've been at AGPR since June 2019 and am looking for a very special home. I may be eight years old or so...we don't know.

My main goal in life is to protect my resources. My people and property are very important to me. I'm not fond of people I don't know coming on to "my property". And I'm not afraid to scare them away if they approach my yard. When I am outside and one of those delivery trucks come up the driveway, I let everyone on the premises know an intruder is coming. And I let the intruder know not to mess with any of my people.

The funny thing is that once I get to know you, I love you and enjoy being loved in return. Because I am so protective, I really don't feel comfortable in a home with kids or in a home with an active social life. My best Pyr friend here at the rescue is Kristoph. He's a big boy and he knows how to play rough and tumble. But he also knows when to stop. The best thing is, he knows how to listen to me when I tell him to chase someone or something away.

2021 was exciting for me. We got little chicks and a couple of ducklings. Kristoph and I were given the opportunity to show that we can guard them and watch over them. Birds of prey don't even dare approaching our "flock". The volunteers tell us time and time again that they love watching us do "our thing". We have a job and we do it well!!! And we have been doing it ever since and keeping all the new and old chickens safe.

You know, even though I would love an acre or two (or a hundred) of fenced in land to protect (maybe even some chickens???) and some livestock guardian dog savvy humans to love, I am very, very happy here at AGPR. I'm comfortable...I have my human friends, Kristoph, a very cool Livestock Guardian house to survey my property, comfortable inside accommodations, and an excellent meal plan. No city or the burbs for me and no being paraded through a neighborhood meeting lots of other dogs and people.

I asked to be posted on Petfinder so everyone could see that I am happy here and know I have a forever home. And I have a job and BFF. AGPR will provide me everything I need to have a healthy and safe life as long as the donations continue to support our non-profit.

All Great Pyrenees require a fenced-in yard (at least four foot high). If you have questions about the breed or our adoption policies and procedures, please go to our website at www.agprescue.org. There's plenty of good information about the breed on our website - Pyrs aren't a breed for everyone!

Our adoption application is online: http://agprescue.org/adoption-application/agpr-application-donations/ Please note that we are a small regional rescue organization. We will consider adopting to families within a four to five hour drive to Richmond, VA
