Willard's Story
In the shelter Willard is a shy but sweet shepherd with a gentle heart and a calm demeanor. He may take some time to warm up to new people and environments, but once he feels safe, he shows his loyal and affectionate side. Willard enjoys quiet spaces where he can observe at his own pace, gentle walks, and calm companionship. He thrives in a patient, understanding home that allows him to build confidence gradually. He has met a few other dogs at the shelter and was polite, but prefers to keep to himself rather than engage in play so far. He has not met any cats yet. With time, consistency, and positive experiences, Willard will blossom into a devoted companion who will reward his family with loyalty and love. He would do best in a calm, structured environment where his shy nature is respected and nurtured.

Volunteer perspective: I love this gentle man. It’s been so rewarding to watch his progress. Willard is still shy, but is starting to play with us in the yard. He’ll let me scratch under his chin and when I stop, he steps closer for more. At just over 40 pounds, he could be perfect for a shepherd lover who wants a smaller version of their favorite breed.

Overnight Sleepover: Willard is truly a different dog outside of the shelter environment. In a home, he is engaging, playful, affectionate, and easygoing. He quickly made himself at home, bonding with my dogs almost immediately by initiating play and happily joining in their activities. He also sought out attention from people and seemed to enjoy being part of the family.

Willard loves spending time outdoors, running in the yard, playing with toys, and exploring his surroundings. He is also very intelligent—he mastered my doggy door within the first 10 minutes of being in the house. His smarts and curiosity likely contribute to his reputation as an escape artist. He is always interested when a door opens and will need a family committed to supervising outdoor time and ensuring fences, gates, and doors are secure. He did not have unsupervised time in my yard because of the potential to escape. If you have other dogs in the home a meet-and-greet is recommended to ensure a good match. When it comes to treats, Willard wasn't interested in dry biscuits but happily accepted peanut butter and softer, tastier treats, which should be helpful for continued training and bonding.

Although he was only with me for less than 18 hours, Willard settled in so naturally that it felt like he had already been part of the family for much longer. He has a wonderful personality that really shines once he's out of the shelter and given a chance to relax.
