Meet Whizzer

Whizzer here! First off, although I’m a rotund young man of about 22lbs, I want you to know I’m already losing weight since coming into rescue because I’m eating less and exercising more – it shows! The vet says to keep up the good work. You can see I’m a great-looking chap with beautiful markings and distinctive brown eyebrows.

Important: I will need an experienced jrt adopter as I have a big man attitude in a little man body. I need patience and some positive reinforcement training so I understand that good things will come from you. A fenced in yard is preferable and no other dogs.

Nobody was sure of my age but the vet thinks around 6 sounds right and I agree. Let’s just say I enjoy being active and going for neighbourhood walks (especially if there are squirrels around), but I also like to relax and curl up on the couch with my humans.

Here’s what my foster mom and dad have to say about me:

Whizzer is very affectionate, but it has to be on his terms. Be patient and let him come to you. He has a fun personality and loves being with people and playing with his favourite toys. He can be a possessive with his toys, so working on 'drop' is highly recommended. Whizzer is a sweet boy and, like all jrts, thinks he's a big dog who has to let you know his boundaries with a bit of growling. Its all noise though.

We think he's apprehensive with new people, plus he likes to guard his humans. Once he sees you’re not a threat he’s very accepting, will wag his tail and come over to greet you.

Whizzer, so far, is a man's dog. While he likes woman and will cuddle up to my wife, he doesn't like to be the 'third party'. As is common with jrts, they tend to bond with one person right away and we feel this will change, given time.

While Whizzer is interested in other dogs and played well with a JRTRO volunteer’s female, we think he would be best suited as an only dog – not because he’s overly reactive, but because he likes to be the centre of attention and prefers not to share. He craves company and will shadow whoever is around, however he favours dad.

Whizzer happily goes into his crate and sleeps through the night when told "Bedtime!" He much prefers his crate to being in bed with his humans, because he wants a sound sleep so he doesn’t wake up cranky!

Whizzer could probably do well being left alone for a few hours during the day because he's not overly active and doesn’t appear to have separation anxiety, but a retired person (or couple) would suit best as he really enjoys the company.

We don’t recommend Whizzer around younger children, as he might feel overwhelmed, especially if they run up to him or grab his toy away which would make him very unhappy! We just tell the grandchildren to leave Whizzer alone and there have been no issues.

To sum it up, Whizzer needs experienced adopters who understand the JRT breed and attitude, who will be patient during the adjustment period and will not be put off by some growling as a means of communication. Also, they would need to understand he seems to bond more quickly with one person, but that doesn’t mean he won’t love other family members in time.
