WEAGLES-JJ ( LESLIE ARKANSAS)'s Story

WEAGLES NEEDS A CHANCE FOR A HOME, READ HIS BIO THROUGH. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING HIM OR HAVE QUESTIONS CALL JANEEN 406-323-3519…KEEP TRYING IF NO ANSWER OR LEAVE MESSAGE. we need an online adopt application also and no one is obligated to adopt by filling one out. Good way to get acquainted. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FOSTERING HIM CALL AND DISCUSS IT WITH US. Long distance transport can be discussed.

STATS: Weagles is a 9 year old Walker Hound X Blue and/or Red Heeler and possibly Catahoula in the mix. A neutered male, up to date on vaccs and HW tested and is negative and on prevention. He takes Heartguard and Nexgard. is just in his baby stage, due to all of his life in a shelter, ALL 9 YEARS OF HIS Life to date was shelter, now he is in foster care and just learning about life, noises, trust and social skills. We are amazed at how well he is handling all this NEW stuff. But he is not a polished seasoned dog. Good potential and worth the patience we ask for an adopter for him as he begs for a real chance at life. He has had excellent care. The best any shelter could possibly give. The shelter staff has loved him. This dog is house broken wonderfully. At the shelter he hated soiling in his pen so he did his jobs all on the perimeter. No Cats no small dogs due to him being a hunting breed. He has not been tested on children but when visiting local business he is well behaved and shows interest in children in nice moderate manner.. but we would say no toddlers. He is really going to be a good companion dog, and that would be ideal. We feel he still has plenty of years and stamina. We see possibilities of him being well able to hike and exercise reasonably and that would be to his advantage once he is eased into it and conditioned. He would need to build muscle due to past years of shelter confinement for such a long period of time. Car rides are ok for him he is not overstressed considering it is a new experience. He is crate broke and kennel broke beautifully. We advise that his crate be a part of his security in his new life for he loves his crate. He is not a leash puller unless he gets spooked at a new encounter and then he could bolt. He should be leashed or on long line at all times. He is a hound and if he bolted he might just not know where to go and when to stop. He does ok with veterinarian care without muzzling or sedatives. So no over reaction. He loves balls and entertains himself with one and he hides his toys in his safe crate under his dog bed. He likes company when he sleeps. He is not a water loving dog. He won’t go swimming with you…. Might learn, but don’t count on it. No food possessiveness with humans whatsoever. ADAMANTLY WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY DOG BEING FED TOGETHER. DOGS SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO COMPETE WITH ANOTHER FOR WHAT KEEPS THEM ALIVE. He alerts when strangers come but he is not excessive with barking. He is standoffish and stands by the one he trusts when strangers come into the home, sort of observing. He is more friendly with women over men. He has a cautiousness. Not a digger so far but we do not think it a good idea to leave him separated alone in a yard unattended. Why not give this boy a chance? He deserves it. Long distance adoptions and transport can be discussed.

HISTORY: According to records he was an owner surrender, interred into the no kill shelter when he was 7 weeks old. He has lived in the shelter all these years. Current foster volunteered at the local no kill shelter after it changed management and she caught her attention. But the foster actually met him back in Feb 2024 and observed him there in his environment. He was 9 years old and after she heard his story and observed him interacting with other dogs and his interaction with people and strange encounters that he didn’t understand she decided to spring him and foster him. This dog needed a chance for a life. The old management had labeled him unadoptable and that is why he never had a chance for a new home and we now appreciate the shelter giving us and him a chance as a senior. No one can figure out WHY he was labeled unadoptable by the past management. Foster says he is the sweetest dog in the world. And now he is being introduced to home life and while it is strange to him he really is sorting things out fairly well and fast.

GOOD: He likes to cuddle, but really doesn’t quite understand or trust just yet. While in foster care.,. We work on those things. He doesn’t care if you reach in his space and crate to work with and on him. Gentle care and no rough handling of course. No leash puller, walks well on leash. Learning to give kisses, takes food and treats gently. Remember he is like a baby.. it is all new to this 9 year old puppy.. but he blossoms daily. Ball play is excellent and we are playing games with him to mentally stimulate him and bring him forward.

BAD: Toenail trims which are tolerated once he trusts you or your vet.. but only tolerated. This is not horrible but go slow and be patient and kind. Once you have his trust you can do most anything with him. He craves someone he can trust and desires one to be his person. All critters that have not been socialized have a fight or flight mode.. his is not fight, it is definitely bolt and get to safety. For everything that is normal that he has never encountered.. he is willing if everyone goes slow and shows patience.. Throw your calendars and watches away as he has nine years missing in his dog social world that we consider normal. He is healthy and full of life and we believe he has a lot of years left. He weighs about 30 pounds and that makes his 9 years more middle aged for this size of dog.

UGLY: Foster’s only concern for this dog being considered ugly is that since he is a hound we would say NO CATS. He shows too much interest with high drive in them. And the only other thing would be male dogs or even female dogs that are in your face bossy and pushy. That would be risky and MIGHT NOT WORK. He has interacted with friendly non pushy male dogs once he is introduced slowly and no food in the mix between them, always supervised. NO SMALL DOGS because of hunting drive.
