Turkey's Story
Turkey, a 10 ½ year old male Shih Tzu mix, is looking to expand his social circle and become the treasured member of a household. He is an affectionate fun little guy. He weighs 17 ½ pounds.

Turkey is a special needs animal. He is prone to bladder stones – it is a type of stone characteristic to the Shih Tzu breed. He must be maintained on medications and a special diet to manage stone formation. The cost of the medications and special diet is $110 per month (not a whole lot more than maintenance on most any premium food). He requires medical monitoring of his condition. As a Shih Tzu the other necessary expense is grooming every couple of months or so. The trade off, a great, great little dog! A wonderful companion.

Turkey came to Illinois Humane from Sangamon County Animal Control. The couple days before Thanksgiving 2023, he was impounded by Sangamon County as a stray. He was completely blocked with stones in his bladder and urethra. He spent the holiday weekend at the Animal Emergency Clinic, where he acquired his name! Monday after the holiday Illinois Humane whisked him to Purdue University’s small animal clinic where he was cleared of the stones. University doctors have been providing evaluation, treatment and consultation since to monitor his condition and adjust his medications for proper management of the stones.

On October 7, Purdue University Small Animal Clinic performed imaging. The results were that Turkey was clear of stones. The meds and diet are working. Both Turkey's docs found him to be adorable. When it was made known Mr. Turkey is available for adoption, the doctor's only excuse was that he has too many foster failures already!

Turkey has come a long way medically. He is now ready to find his forever home – a home who is able and willing to accommodate his special needs.
