~ A JOURNEY FROM THE STREETS TO HOPE<br/>The Animal Welfare Department in Puerto Vallarta received a call about a small stray dog who had been hit by a car and left on the side of the road. Kind neighbors wanted to help, but living in a low-income area and unable to afford veterinary care, they did the right thing and called the authorities. When he was rescued, it was clear life hadn’t been kind to him. He was dirty, underweight, covered in fleas and ticks, and dragging his right front leg as he tried to walk. He was taken to the vet, where he received treatment for internal and external parasites, along with vitamins that helped him quickly start feeling better. An orthopedic specialist confirmed a nerve injury in his right front leg and recommended physical therapy. With consistent care, he has made great progress; he regained strength and muscle, uses the leg, walks, runs, and goes up and down stairs independently. He does have mild, occasional limping, especially after longer or faster walks (about 10–15 minutes), likely due to muscle fatigue or lingering discomfort. Shorter walks at a calm pace suit him best, and with that routine he lives comfortably and happily (we can provide a full orthopedic report available upon request). It’s taken a bit of time, but this guy is ready for his second chance.<br/><br/>Tony is about 3 years old, weighs about 6 kilos, and is a loving Jack Russel/ Chihuahua mix.<br/><br/>Tony loves people of all ages, but he can be nervous when first meeting strangers. Because of some negative experiences while living on the streets, he may bark and try to scare new people away at first. He does this out of fear, not aggression, and he needs about a day or two to feel safe and build trust. During that adjustment time, strangers should not try to pet him, simply coexisting in his space helps him to gain confidence and is the simple way to deal with this challenge. Once he feels comfortable, Tony is incredibly loving and affectionate with humans of all ages. He gets along well with other dogs, walks nicely on leash, and is not bothered by loud noises. He is not possessive of food, toys, or his favorite sleeping spot. Tony does tend to chase cats, so a cat-free home would be best. With patience, understanding, and a calm introduction, Tony becomes a loyal and wonderful companion. His fosters are still working on some male marking behavior as he still occasionally pee indoors, though two or more daily walks, especially on grass, greatly reduce this behavior. He has alkaline pH urine which is easily controlled but could make him prone to developing crystals and possibly bladder stones. Future adopters should be aware that he may need a low-grain diet or special food to help control pH and prevent crystal formation. He can be left alone for up to 5 hours with no destructive behavior and enjoys relaxing on the patio. Tony is playful, active, and loves walks, but prefers calm, quiet homes and does best with adults, as too much noise or excitement can overwhelm him.
