Tommy AKA Tucker's Story

Tucker AKA Tommy :) - 10 months & 60lbs (as of 5/27), Pyr & Lab Mix, Neutered
Estimated Full Grown Size Around 80lbs

This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org

Thier Foster Parent Says: "We could go on and on about Tommy. He is such an incredibly affectionate, gentle, goofy puppy with massive golden retriever energy. He loves to cuddle on the couch while you watch TV, carrying toys around the house (especially ones that look like birds), chewing on bully sticks, and running around outside. One of our absolute favorite things about him is the way he leans his full weight into you when he's happy (which is basically all the time). It genuinely feels like a warm hug. He's still learning that the world can be safe, so new things like riding in elevators and walking into stores were initially intimidating for him, but once he is in a new environment, he adapts remarkably fast and is totally peaceful. Tommy absolutely thrives with structure, patience, and a chill environment, and he just really wants to connect with and please his people. His routine has been two long walks a day, plus two potty breaks, plenty of enforced rest (crated or tethered), and he eats his meals at 8am and 6pm (he's been loving Ollie 5-6 cups/day). The TLDR on Tommy is this: he's a deeply sweet, affable, curious, loving dog who just wants to find his forever home. He's going to grow up to become an incredible family dog and companion."

Level of dog ownership experience required:
INTERMEDIATE – As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it's also tremendous work. Puppies' personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they're a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup's evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult.

ENERGY LEVEL
Higher - Tommy is somewhere between Medium and High. Tommy does well with approximately 30 minutes of exercise in the morning when paired with enrichment, training, and additional walks throughout the day totaling around 90-120 minutes a day. He will benefit enormously from additional/regular socializing, mental engagement, walks and obedience training.

TOLERANCE TO CITY
Adjusting to the city (but in a week or less he will be a pro)
Tommy is remarkably resilient and adaptable. After just one night with us, we took him upstate where it was quiet and he had plenty of land to run around on, which he absolutely loved. So far, his adjustment to city life has been going really well. He still gets startled by loud noises and needs a little time to build confidence, but he's completely fine in bustling environments and continues to settle in more every day.

POTTY TRAINING
Yes - needs patience for the first few days but he gets into the swing of things

COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS
Social butterfly

BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)
Yes - Aged 8 and older. He couldn't be friendlier.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS
Yes – Good with most other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other canines

RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.)
Yes

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR
Working on it - With more training and structure. Like many puppies, he'll happily go for shoes, pillows, or anything left within reach. To solve for that, we made sure he always had plenty of chew toys, PB kongs, and a bully stick each day, which helps a lot.

SEPARATION ANXIETY
Doing Great - Tommy is able to sleep alone in his own room. He may protest-whine a little at first, but it never lasts long as long as he's ignored and has something to self-soothe with, like a chew toy or Kong. With continued training and consistency, he should do completely fine. He's clearly been through a lot, but he's remarkably adaptable and resilient. We have "enforced rest" periods where he's able to be alone in the office (tethered) or crated alone for up to 4 hours.

LEASH MANNERS
Getting the hang of it, but improving everyday!

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL
High – Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time - Tommy is the ultimate cuddler.

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO
Listens to correction - This is another area where training will do the trick. He's incredibly eager to please.

CRATE TRAINING
Yes - Now fully crate trained

Medical status:
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines, spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. (For dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age.)

How did this dog end up with Social Tees?
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
