Tommy's Story

Where do we even begin to tell you about Tommy? Bear with us – this kid has a long story despite his young age. This brave boy was found as a tiny tot in Puerto Rico with a severely broken leg; he was injured by the car that hit and killed his mother. We worked with rescuers on the island to receive veterinary care, and it was determined that the best option was to amputate his hind leg. A tiny babe, enduring so much.

When he made it to Colorado, Tommy immediately settled in with his foster family and showed how sweet, fun, and playful he could be. Unfortunately, tragedy soon struck again. It became clear that there was something wrong with his amputation site. A trip to the vet the day after Christmas revealed that his first amputation was botched. He required a second surgery, known as an amputation revision. Over 50 generous souls came together on short notice to donate to a GoFundMe to make sure we could afford the second surgery with the best possible surgeon we could find. Tommy, the lovely boy with the indomitable spirit, captured the hearts of many.

And now? Tommy is proving that life on three legs is where it’s at. He has such a perfect personality despite what he has endured. He loves his foster siblings and his foster parents. He lives for good walks, toys, playing, snacks, and cuddles.

Tommy is totally potty-trained. He stays in a crate when his foster mom goes to work and doesn’t make a peep. We were very concerned about socialization for Tommy, as we got a late start given his health complications, but he is the bravest boy! He enjoys outings to Home Depot, Lowe’s, the park, etc. He greets other dogs calmly while on his leash and is confident when meeting new humans. Tommy has met children when out and about and enjoys them. He has not met cats yet, but he’s so young that we think he would adjust just fine.

Is Tommy perfect? Yes. Does he have a few areas for growth? Also, yes. He gets a bit carsick, which is common for puppies. He’s also quite intimidated by stairs. There aren’t any in his foster home beyond a few steps here and there, so that is a work in progress.

Tommy does sleep in bed with his foster family. It started out of necessity when his foster mom was worried about his health and wanted him nearby, but Tommy made it clear that he prefers to be in bed. We do hope his forever home also agrees with Tommy’s preferred sleeping arrangement.

Here’s the thing: we are very invested in making sure the rest of Tommy’s life is absolutely luxe to make up for his rough start. Are you up for the challenge? If you think so, please apply.

Tommy is fully vaccinated but not yet neutered. This was delayed due to his other surgeries. Because of this, he is available as a foster-to-adopt. This is when a future owner takes over as the foster, and once all the adoption criteria are met, they complete the process!

We do not anticipate Tommy requiring any additional medical care for his hind leg, but we are hoping his permanent home will be willing to explore physical therapy until we are certain he is as strong as he needs to be. Since he will be a foster-to-adopt, the rescue will help cover these costs.

Usually, satos (homeless dogs from Puerto Rico) are a mix of many breeds, some chihuahua, some pit, and you name it! They are always loving and grateful.

We do not know what breed Tommy is. Maybe a cattle dog mix? Our volunteers have suggested a bully breed (he has an impressive block head), a lab, or a boxer. Whatever he is, it's a handsome mix. We anticipate he will grow into a middle-sized adult, possibly around 40-50lb, but of course, they do sometimes surprise us!

If you are interested in adopting Tommy, please fill out the application here:
https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BSCO/Dog
