Tequila

On June 5, 2026, a 10 year old female tri-colored Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. She was referred to us by Allied Emergency Hospital for emergency surgery. She had delivered 3 live puppies at home but her labor had stalled. X-rays performed at Allied showed she had 3 more puppies stuck inside her. She was only exhibiting weak contractions. Allieds doctors attempted medical treatment with Oxytocin to see if could get her labor to progress. It was not successful. The owners could not afford surgery. Allied recommended transferring to Northwood Animal Hospital for relinquishment for emergency surgery, in hopes of saving momma dog and the remaining puppies. The owners made the difficult decision to relinquish her for care. <br/><br/>Momma dog and the 3 puppies she had already delivered were brought to Northwood immediately. Momma dog underwent emergency surgery. Unfortunately, the 3 puppies that were stuck inside her were already deceased. They had been stuck for too long. She was spayed after puppies were removed. During recovery from surgery, momma dogs heart stopped. Fortunately, we were able to bring her back with CPR. <br/><br/>We named her Tequila. We named her puppies Taco, Tamale and Tequito.<br/><br/>Even with as ill as she was, Tequila was a good momma. She tried so hard. Unfortunately, she was not producing milk. The puppies were nursing, but were losing weight. <br/><br/>Tequito died June 7th even though we were supplementing the puppies with milk replacer at that point. Tequito was much smaller than the brothers. Taco and Tamale did well with a combination of tube feeding puppy milk replacer while still being cared for/kept clean by their momma. <br/><br/>June 10th Tequilas surgical incision started opening up. Then her appetite started declining and she became progressively more ill. She underwent a second abdominal exploratory surgery June 16th to clean up the infection of the skin infection. Ultrasound had shown possible infection of her uterine stump. Upon entering her abdomen to evaluate the area, accidentally an incision was made into a loop of small intestines due to an adhesion which stuck the intestines up against the body wall. The surgeon noted SEVERE adhesions throughout her abdomen, with small intestines and colon adhering to each other, to the bladder, to the kidneys, to the bladder wall, etc. In the process of trying to gently break down the adhesions, one section of Tequilas small intestines tore. Tequila had 2 small segments of her small intestines removed (called a resection and anastamosis) in the areas where her intestines were damaged. No further break down of adhesions was attempted due to risks to her. <br/><br/>Tequila healed GREAT after that second surgery. She has been microchipped, vaccinated and has tested negative for heartworms. We have her scheduled in August to undergo surgery for dental cleaning and possible extractions. <br/><br/>Tequila has been through so much and always maintained a happy outlook. Unless you are a cat. She does not like cats at all! Please consider adopting this senior girl. She has earned a happy, lazy life.
