Tango AKA Backpack's Story

Meet Tango AKA Backpack

Backpack is an 11 month old Australian Shepherd / Cattle Dog mix, weighing approximately 20 lbs.

He is a fun little guy with a big personality with the typical needs for his breed mix. He's looking for a new home, experienced with his breeds and needs.

Backpack loves a good game of tug and will happily get into the conflict play a lot of these dogs crave, but he's more sensitive than he lets on. He'll play fetch, but he's more of a chase guy. He loves the run and the grab, but the bring-it-back part is still coming along. That's trainable, and it points to what he really needs, which is a job.

He is a dog who wants mental work as much as a tired body. Trick training, dock diving for fun, barn hunt, flyball, anything that lets him move fast and think while he does it. He craves the work, but like most cattle dogs, you have to sell him on your ideas. Once he buys in, he's all the way in.

Backpack is very dog social and will do well with stable, adult dogs who will hold their own. With confident company, he's a good hang!

He does well in his crate and responds well to clear boundaries set early. After he's been out and working or socializing, he gets plenty of breaks. Lots of nap time and downtime between sessions. Structure is a big part of why he's doing well, and it's the kind of setup he'll need going forward.

Transitions are where Backpack asks the most of his people. His foster is working with him on handling changes and tolerance.

Backpack has some quirks, but he's got an even temperament underneath it all and a lot of classic cattle dog drive, which is why he needs an experienced home with no children under 13 years old. For the right home, he's going to be a really rewarding dog!

If Tango (Backpack) could be the perfect addition to your home, please submit an adoption application on our website: furlovehaven.org

** Please understand that we are a volunteer-run organization and we do our best to respond in a timely manner. Due to the high volume of applications, emails & phone calls we receive, we may be unable to respond to everyone.

The first step is to submit an adoption application.

We will review your application and you may be contacted if this animal miught be a good fit.

Please be aware, submitting an application is not a guarantee, but if we think you might be a potential fit, someone will contact you within 72 hours.

The adoption fee is not refundable after 15 days from the date of the adoption agreement even if returned to FLH. The adopter will ensure the animal is up to date on vaccines and notify FLH of any behavioral problems that have occurred before an adopted animal is returned. At the time of adoption, the animal will have age appropriate core vaccinations unless an FLH veterinarian recommends delaying any vaccinations for health reasons. If vaccinations were not completed and were due prior to adoption, an FLH representative will coordinate vaccines at the expense of FLH. Core vaccinations are DHPP, Bordatella and Rabies for dogs; FVRCP and Rabies for cats. The adopter is financially responsible for the animal (including boosters and subsequent vaccinations) effective the date of the adoption. A representative from the organization may make inquiries to veterinarians or visit the animal to ensure that it is well taken care of. If we find that the animal has been neglected or abused in any way or for any reason, we reserve the right to remove the animal from the premises. Adopters agree to immediately notify FLH of any change of contact information (address, phone number, or email address) or the event the animal becomes lost or dies. Adopters agree to notify FLH, without delay, if they can no longer care for or keep their animal and agree to give FLH reasonable time to rehome or place the animal in an approved foster home, if available. At FLH discretion we may approve a foster-to-adopt arrangement. An adoption is not final until confirmation is received in written form from FLH. At FLH discretion FLH may approve an adoption prior to the spay/neuter of an animal and a Spay/Neuter Agreement will be required.
