Taki's Story

At 11 years old and about 43 pounds, Taki is proof that it's never too late for a new beginning.

He has spent his entire life learning that the world is a very small place.

He lived in a backyard with more than 30 other dogs until his caretaker became too ill to care for them. Suddenly, everything Taki had ever known changed. A house, soft beds, television noises, ceiling fans, car rides, leashes, routines, and people who wanted nothing more than to love him were all completely new.

And yet... despite how scary that must have been, Taki has quietly amazed everyone around him.

He is one of the gentlest, sweetest souls you'll ever meet. There's an innocence about him that's impossible to miss. Every new milestone feels like watching someone discover the world for the very first time.

Taki is housetrained and crate trained, and his crate is incredibly important to him. It's his safe place where he can relax and decompress, so he'll need a home that understands and respects that.

As his confidence has grown, so has his personality. Every morning and every time his foster parents come home from work, Taki greets them with the cutest little tippy-tappy dance. Breakfast and dinner are the highlights of his day, and he gets adorably excited when it's mealtime.

One thing Taki absolutely loves is being outside. Whether he's soaking up the sunshine or taking a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, he's happiest when he gets to quietly explore the world by your side. He's pretty good on leash and makes a wonderful walking companion.

The biggest transformation, though, has been watching him learn that affection can be safe.

His foster family has practiced lots of "consent petting," allowing Taki to choose when he wants attention. Now he'll happily walk over, gently boop their hands to ask for pets, shower them with sweet kisses, and lean in for reassurance. If he's had enough, he'll simply wander away-but more often than not, he comes right back for another round of pets and kisses.

While he may briefly greet new people for a few gentle face scratches, his biggest displays of affection are reserved for the people he's learned to trust. Being chosen by Taki is something truly special.

He's wonderfully treat motivated (especially if yogurt sticks or Pupperoni are involved!) and always takes treats ever so gently.

Taki is a quiet, low-energy companion. He enjoys relaxing in his favorite safe spots but has become increasingly curious as he's settled into foster care. Like any dog learning what life inside a home is all about, he's investigated the trash can or picked up something he shouldn't a handful of times when left unsupervised-but these little adventures have been rare, and he doesn't do them when his people are around.

He's good in the car (though he appreciates a little boost getting in) and has been non-reactive toward the cats in his foster home while slow introductions continue.

Because he's still building confidence, Taki would do best in a calm home with patient adopters. A confident, relaxed canine companion could help show him the ropes, but he may also do just fine as an only dog with people willing to let him blossom at his own pace. He'd be happiest in a home without any children or dog-savvy teens (15+).

Taki can jump a 4-foot fence, so if his new home has a fenced yard, he'll need supervision outside during his first few weeks while he settles in and learns that this new place is home. As his confidence and bond with his family continue to grow, that desire to wander should lessen, but he'll need a patient family committed to helping him adjust safely.

Taki isn't looking for perfection.

He's looking for someone who will celebrate every brave step, smile at every tippy-tappy greeting, cherish every little hand boop asking for pets, and understand that the deepest kind of love is sometimes the quietest.

Watching Taki discover how wonderful life can be has been a privilege. Now all he needs is a family to keep showing him that he's finally home.

If you're interested in meeting Taki, text his foster mom at 704-689-5027.
