Sunshine's Story

Sunshine is an extremely sweet dog. Very submissive, very gentle, and genuinely good with other animals, including cats. Other dogs help Sun feel more confident, so a home with a dog sibling would be a great fit. She never growls or tries to create conflict. When she gets scared, she freezes or retreats. She is a soft, sweet, and gentle soul. And once she trusts somebody, she is incredibly affectionate in her own loveable way. She gives very gentle little kisses and absolutely loves being smooched on the side of her face, and getting booty scratches.

She is well behaved, never gets into anything she shouldn't, and is housebroken. She loves playing with other dogs, but with her person she is very calm. She does not jump all over you, bark, or create ruckus in the house. And surprisingly, even though the world is scary, she doesn't mind bad weather at all and even goes outside in the rain. If you are naturally more introverted, calm, or just enjoy a peaceful lifestyle with your dog, Sunshine is perfect for that.

But she is not a dog for somebody that wants a social butterfly. Sunshine is never going to be the dog greeting strangers at the coffee shop or wanting attention from everybody she meets. Her world is much smaller than that. But because of that, her relationships become very deep and very personal.

A lot of Sunshine's fearfulness comes from the fact that she spent the first year of her life at animal control, living in a kennel with her siblings. That was her entire world until a few months ago. She never had the chance to learn that things outside of it were safe, so now she is encountering an enormous amount of things for the first time. Everyday experiences that most dogs absorb naturally as puppies are still brand new to her. The world right now is scary because it is unfamiliar, and she is slowly unlearning that.

Because of her past Sunshine is very sensitive and very situation dependent. She needs routines and predictability. She needs a person that does not constantly push her out of her comfort zone just because they are impatient to see progress. At the same time, she needs somebody thoughtful enough to gently help her experience new things without overwhelming her. There is a balance to dogs like Sunshine. Too much pressure shuts them down, but too little guidance can leave them stuck in fear forever.

She pays attention to how people move, how they react, how predictable they are, whether they respect her space, and whether they make her feel safe. The adopter who's right for Sunshine naturally slows down around sensitive animals instead of trying to overpower them. They do not see her fearfulness as annoying, but as innocence that needs guidance. They are patient, calm, observant, and emotionally mature. She relaxes around the type of person that can give her space without feeling rejected by it.

The right person for Sunshine genuinely enjoys earned progress. They notice tiny changes and actually care about them. They understand that a fearful dog finally relaxing enough to fall asleep next to you or calmly sniffing on a walk instead of scanning everything around her are not small things for a dog like this. Those are huge moments.

There is something that is hard to put into words about watching a dog that used to be scared of everything slowly start to feel safe because of you. When they can finally rest and stop bracing for something bad to happen. Seeing them start looking for you on purpose because you became home to them. It is difficult to explain to somebody that has never experienced it, but that bond is more rewarding than any other.

Sunshine has a lot to offer the right person because she makes people slow down and pay attention. You become more patient, more observant, and more gentle. Her progress is slower but it feels incredibly meaningful because you know how hard she had to work for every little bit of it.

Dogs like Sunshine wait a long time for the right home because not everyone has what she needs, but the ones who do are exactly the kind of person worth waiting for. If this resonated with you, please reach out. She deserves someone who will love her for who she is.

Sunshine is an extremely sweet, gentle dog that is genuinely good with other animals, including cats. She is very submissive and never tries to create conflict. When she feels scared, she freezes or retreats instead of reacting aggressively. Once she trusts somebody, she becomes deeply affectionate in her own soft way. She loves gentle kisses on the side of her face, booty scratches, and quietly staying close to her person. Small kids would be too scary for her at this time since they move fast and unpredictable.

She is housebroken, calm in the home, and very well behaved. She does not bark excessively, jump all over people, or get into things she should not. She enjoys playing with other dogs, and having another calm dog in the home helps her feel more confident and secure. Sunshine would do best with a dog sibling.

Sunshine spent the first year of her life living in a kennel at animal control with her siblings, so the outside world is still very new to her. Many normal experiences that most dogs learn as puppies are things she is only beginning to understand now. Because of this, she is very sensitive and needs patience, routine, and predictability.

She is not a social butterfly and probably never will be. She pays close attention to how people move, react, and respect her space. Too much pressure overwhelms her, but gentle guidance helps her slowly build confidence.
