And before anyone falls for those big brown eyes (because seriously... look at that face ), there’s one very important thing to know:<br/><br/>Steely Dan needs a WOMEN-ONLY home.<br/><br/>Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about why this 18-pound rat terrier is such a fun little guy. <br/><br/>THE GREATEST HITS<br/><br/>- Smart, alert & always paying attention<br/>- Energetic, playful & athletic<br/>- Extremely devoted to his person<br/>- Enjoys other playful dogs<br/>- House & crate trained<br/>- Professional cuddler & blanket burrower<br/><br/>Steely Dan has plenty of that classic rat terrier energy. Those little legs need somewhere to GO! He’d love a yard where he can run and stretch his legs, or a home with someone who enjoys taking lots of walks and keeping him active.<br/><br/>And after all that activity? This little athlete turns into a world-class snuggle bug. He loves cuddling with his person and crawling underneath the blankets to sleep. Apparently sleeping on top of a blanket is for amateurs. <br/><br/> HE LOVES HIS PERSON... A LOT<br/><br/>Once Steely Dan picks his person, he takes that relationship pretty seriously. He can resource guard his favorite human, which means he needs someone who understands that loving him also means giving him boundaries.<br/><br/>Steely Dan is smart, and if the rules change depending on how cute he looks that day... well, congratulations, you now work for Steely Dan. <br/><br/>He needs an experienced dog owner who will set appropriate boundaries, follow through and remain consistent.<br/><br/>ABOUT THAT WOMEN-ONLY REQUIREMENT...<br/><br/>Steely Dan has had two previous adoptions, and unfortunately neither became his forever home. In both homes, he was given time to adjust to the men in the household, but he remained fearful and never became comfortable living with them.<br/><br/>We’ve learned from those experiences, and we don’t want to ask Steely Dan to be something he isn’t.<br/><br/>So this time we’re listening to him. <br/><br/>His next and forever home must be women only. No children.<br/><br/>AND THEN THERE’S THE FENCE...<br/><br/>Steely Dan would LOVE a fenced yard, but it needs to be VERY secure.<br/><br/>This little dude apparently studied advanced escape techniques at Houdini University. He can squeeze through tiny gaps, and once he’s out, his philosophy on recall is basically:<br/><br/>“You can call me. That doesn’t mean I’m coming.” <br/><br/>Any fenced yard will need to be carefully checked for gaps and escape routes. If there isn’t a yard, he’ll need plenty of leashed walks to burn off that rat terrier energy. <br/><br/> READY TO ROCK<br/><br/> Neutered<br/> Microchipped<br/> Up-to-date on vaccinations<br/> Recently had a dental <br/><br/>Steely Dan isn’t the right dog for every household — but he doesn’t need every household. This covers altering, DAP series vaccinations to date of adoption, Bordetella Vaccination, Rabies vaccination if over four months, microchip, deworming, heartworm test, monthly flea/heartworm prevention to date, grooming, full veterinary examination, and temperament evaluation. <br/><br/>All SOAR dogs go through a ten-day quarantine period to ensure they are healthy, before being adopted. We do not operate on a first come first serve basis, but screen applicants in order to find the best fit for our adoptable dogs.
