Spikey's Story

Hi, my name is Spikey! Here is some information my foster family has learned about me in the last few weeks that I have been in foster care:

Spike came to us because he was getting out of his yard, which had an underground fence. He is a perfect example of why those are not appropriate for hounds. He was also barking in the neighborhood while out on his adventures-another typical basset behavior. Spikey previously lived with a couple of dogs and kids. Then he spent a few weeks in boarding while a foster home became available.

Spike has lived with our foster family since late March. After some time in boarding, he needed a little work on getting re-potty trained. While he is back in the grove of things now, he does need to go out potty right after meals, and occasionally has an accident if our schedule is off. Spikey loves sniffing around our fully fenced yard and we have no issues with him trying to get out, but our dogs are also monitored when outside. He does sometimes bark or even howl with other dogs when they bark, but otherwise has not been an overly vocal dog. Spikey is currently at a trim, healthy weight. He does not agree and has been known to counter surf. As is common for many bassets, he would grab things from the counter or garbage if he could, so we keep those things secure.

Spike loves people and attention so very much. He will let anyone who wants to pet him forever and ever. He is great even at the vet, or for nail trims, or ear cleaning. He does not care, as long as he is getting attention. Not all bassets are so agreeable to maintenance, so it is really nice to work with a fellow so easy to care for. He loves people of all ages and sizes. He has caught on to our home routine very easily. He is always happy when we get home. He likes to play with toys and has a silly personality. He sleeps well through the night, and will generally sleep with one of the family members, but will go to his dog bed if he gets hot or squished.

Spikey is used to being in our kitchen alone during the school day while we are gone, though sometimes his foster dad works from home. He is very content with his bed and toys and doesn't get stressed about us leaving. While Spike has lived with other dogs before, he can get crabby at times. He is perfectly happy alone when we leave and we know everyone is safe that way. Spike is currently living with 5 other dogs-and a sixth dog for a brief dog sitting visit. While he is doing fine getting along now, he had to be carefully monitored through the transition. He loves attention so much and can get jealous when another dog invades his time. He can sometimes get protective of his bed or toy. In the first week we had to often gate him out of the room when he was not being kind to the rest of the pack. A month later, he rarely needs a little time out. Not all dog owners are comfortable dealing with some snarking, growling or howling, so please do not apply unless that is something you are comfortable working through.

When we do have to separate Spike from the pack, he is usually perfectly happy to have his alone time. And whatever he was cranky about it quickly forgotten. Our resident dogs are used to fosters in the house and do not get very fazed by his behavior. However, an overly reactive or overly timid dog may not be a great match for him. He would likely be happy as an only dog as well. But he is spending his time with other dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages currently. He does pull some on a leash but we have not gotten into much of a routine with that yet, due to a busy time of year. He loves to hop into the car, but his previously family says he has been known to get car sick. He seems to manage short drives ok.

Spikey also eats his food alone, as all of our dogs do. He may benefit from a slow feeding bowl as he scarfs quickly. He is eating from an elevated bowl at this time. Currently he does not have any known food allergies or issues, but previously had some incidents of spiting up bile. He had x-ray's, a stool check, and bloodwork to rule out any serious explanation, after which he just stopped spitting up as mysteriously as he started. However, he did start itching instead, and appears to have a bout of seasonal allergies. He has just started Apoquel for a short stint and seems to be responding well.

To apply to adopt Spikey, please fill out the application under the "Adoption" heading. You can also find other information there on the adoption process.

Basset Buddies Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c )(3) not-for-profit organization and all donations are used expressly for the welfare of the dogs and most are tax deductible (please contact your tax adviser for more information).
