Meet Spike and Marty

SPIKE AND MARTY ARE A BONDED PAIR AND MUST BE ADOPTED TOGETHER

Spike is an 8 month old, 11 lb. black and tan JRT mix and Marty is a 2 year old, 10 lb. butterscotch Dachshund mix.

They are two playful, off the charts happy young pups, who can get into everything. Within a few days of meeting each other they became best friends and playmates. It is unmistakable that they love each other and always want to be close to each other. They can have independent time if one is tired and doesn't want to play, but even at nap time they want to be close.

Both are progressing well with their house-training and do all their poops outside unless nobody is home and then they will use a mat. They both still mark occasionally in the house but that may be because there are other males in the foster home. We recommend a house with a fenced backyard handy, both for their bathroom activities and because they love playing outside and chasing each other around.

They are typical young pups with boundless energy, want to play, de-stuff toys, chase bowls, chase each other and chase you also. They can grab at fingers and clothes and need to be told firmly that this is a “no, no”. There is no sinking in of teeth, just a “want to hold you with my mouth and didn’t know there were teeth in there.” While they get along with older, responsible and dog-experienced kids, we wouldn’t suggest smaller ones as they might be overwhelmed.

They will chew things, so keep cords up and they also like to raid the kitchen table, so chairs must be pushed in and all things that can hurt them be put safely away. We are recommending that they be re-homed with people who work from home or are retired so they won’t be alone too much and get into mischief.

Both dogs are crate trained but prefer to sleep in bed with their foster, and will have their wrestling match before they settle down to sleep, which they do spreadeagled on their backs, touching and snoring away.

Both are great eaters and love their treats and are gentle taking them. Marty is more grabby and seemingly desperate for food, but he is learning and is respectful of the others’ bowls.

Marty is the more vocal and will bark when excited so apartment living is not suitable. Spike is more quiet and content to wait for you to pick him up.

While they love car rides, they can get sick on very long ones. They love people and to cuddle and are just so eager to learn and move forward.

Their mantra is “Play, play, play, rest, eat, play.” Both are smart boys and Spike, although younger, is learning his commands faster. However, Marty is not getting left behind, he just has to dial back his excitement. If you are up for a pocket-sized dynamic duo in your home, this is the pair for you!

These special little boys are being lovingly fostered in Angus, Ontario, and their combined adoption fee is $900. If you are interested in Spike and Marty, fill out an application at http://russellrescue.org/adoption/
