Sophia's Story

The MexiMutt Project is an initiative of Born Again Pit Bull Rescue. Millions of dogs live on the streets in Mexico, and our rescue works at the source through spay/neuter programs, rescue, medical care, and adoption into loving homes.
- Since 2019, we have matched over 500 dogs with loving homes & spayed/neutered over 3,500 dogs in Mexico.
- All of our dogs are currently in foster care in Guadalajara, Mexico. They are listed in Oregon for adoption purposes because our rescue is based there.
- Once an adoption is approved, the dog will fly to Portland, Oregon (PDX). Most dogs arrive within 2-4 weeks after approval, depending on flight availability.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? Please fill out an application at: www.bapbr.org/apply
(We are unable to respond to adoption inquiries submitted through Petfinder)

**************************
Meet SOPHIA
- AGE: 1 year old (estimated)
- WEIGHT: 10 lbs
- GOOD WITH KIDS who know to respect a dog's space and belongings.
- HOUSEBROKEN? Not 100% yet. As rescues that lived outdoors, they'll need some time to adjust. Most adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training.
- The breed listed is our best guess (since they're rescues!)

Sophia was found alone on the streets of Chapala - no mother, no littermates. Just a tiny 3-month old puppy by herself, covered in fleas and filth. Most street puppies are found with their families. Sophia wasn't. It's likely that someone had her, then abandoned her when they didn't want her anymore.

That kind of beginning leaves a mark. When she arrived in foster care, she was careful - a little guarded, not particularly interested in being held. "She didn't seek out affection the way most puppies do," says her foster mom. "You'd go to pick her up and she'd squirm right back down. " It wasn't unfriendly, exactly - more like she was still deciding whether people were worth the trouble.

And she soon decided they were. In those first weeks, the guarded little puppy started to open up - gaining weight, gaining confidence, discovering fetch with the kind of enthusiasm that makes you wonder if she'd been waiting her whole short life for someone to throw a ball. She has a serious BALL drive and will play for hours!

Then comes the other side of Sophia: the one who loves to climb up onto the hammock to lounge with her foster mom, curling up against her leg to take an afternoon nap. She loves car rides, pressing her tiny nose to the window to get as many smells as possible, and napping in a pile of her own toys like a small queen who happens to prefer a lumpy throne. She cuddles in bed, loves a belly rub, and has the most perfect little underbite that makes it hard to say no to anything she wants.

She'd do well with someone who can match her energy and wind down with her after. She's good with other dogs, cats, and kids, but given her confident and independent nature, she'd thrive as an only dog too.

Sophia has been figuring things out on her own for a long time. She's more than ready to stop. Could your home be where she finally lands?

*************************
Ready to apply?
