It’s impossible not to notice there’s something different about Smokey and Bandit. You can see it in the battle scars all over their bodies, and you can sense it the instant you meet them… It’s called the will to survive.
There’s no doubt about it. These two puppies are the definition of resilient. At only 3 months old, Smokey and Bandit found themselves abandoned in an outdoor kennel at a ramshackle house. Temperatures were below freezing that February morning. Languishing outside in the bitter cold, the slightest bit of warmth was all they could dream about. Then, all of the sudden, Smokey and Bandit began to feel the warmth they had so desperately hoped for, but warm quickly turned into scorching hot. They were stuck, locked in a kennel with nowhere to run, and unable to escape the now burning heat.
By the time the first responders were able to rescue them from the flames, Smokey and Bandit had already sustained severe burns. It’s a wonder they survived the night. But they did. And not only did they survive, they thrived - thanks to the incredible foster family who gave them round-the-clock care and nursed them back to health over the last 5 months.
The vet gave Last Chance Arkansas the green light to put them in obedience training.
Smokey’s foster family reports, Smokey is an easy going and smart dog and gets along well with their dog, kids, and not interested in the cats around the neighborhood. He would make an awesome family dog or be a good companion dog.
Smokey is from the Paws in Prison program where dogs receive obedience training. This dog is a graduate from Paws in Prison. The dogs in this program are trained under the AKC Canine Good Citizen standards and are specifically selected to be family and companion dogs. They spend 24 hours a day with their trainers. For that reason, they will do best in homes where they are primarily inside dogs and spend lots of time with their families. The adoptive family will receive their training journal. This journal documents everything from entering the facility, daily training progress, and interactions with trainers.
