Skippy's Story
Meet Skippy!

We have learned the recipe for a perfect home for Skippy. He needs 1. a home with other small dogs 2. a home with a backyard 3. extremely patient humans that will give him the time and space he needs to come around

Skippy originally came to us from one of our rescue partners in Texas. He was found with 20 other dogs in an abandoned house. We placed 10 others from this group. He is the last one due to his medical condition when he arrived.

He is now healthy and ready for his own home.
He does take a while to decompress and trust. Once he does trust you he will follow you everywhere and is a dog that actually hugs you back. He loves to be picked up (once he trusts you) and will press his body weight into you in his own version of a little hug. He is precious.

Other adopters have done the DNA tests and this grouping was a mix of dachshund, chihuahua and pomeranian.

1. As we stated above a home with other small socially stable dogs is a must. It's the best way to help a more timid dog transition to a new environment.

2. He does walk just fine on a leash and a harness with his current foster mom. But that is because he knows and trusts her. Initially he will be a flight risk which is why a secured fenced yard is a must for him for his new home.

3. Lastly the patient human piece. We don't know what happened to him in the past. With his current foster parents it took a good 3 months for him to come out of his shell. This is a dog you can't force your affection on. But if you are patient and will give him time to come out on his own time you will have a very loyal and adorable fur friend that loves to be held and will hug you back. He is a little shadow that follows you around from room to room.

Foster mom says "Once he comes around he is a joy! He is a very lovable and sweet dog. I love the "hugs" he gives me when holding him. He tucks his head down and nuzzles into your neck. It's so heartwarming. Every day he gets the zoomies and will run around the house or the yard. he really likes stuffed toys. He does play with our other dogs too. He walks well on a leash now. He does load up into a crate easily too. He is quiet in his crate. At night he sleeps in a dog bed on the floor next to the bed. We used to let him out in the middle of the night, but now he is able to hold his potty until morning. He does great on car rides. he will curl up on the seat next to you or on your lap and chill. He isn't a big barker. But when he does bark in excitement when you come home it's a scream/squeal sound. He main way of communicating is through little whiny/squeaky sounds. Sometimes we call him 'Squeaky Skippy'. He has really great recall and will come when called. I work from home and he either lays in a dog bed next to the desk or at my feet all day. Doesn't make a peep so you could be on zoom calls all day and he isn't a bother.
I highly advise any new family to get the pheromone calming products to help him in his transition.
A quiet home with patient, kind and compassionate humans is the perfect recipe for this little man"

Here is a video if him being held: https://youtu.be/PYVGDgXa8GI

Basics: He is a neutered male guessed to be around 2 or 3 years old. Up to date on vaccines, rabies and has a microchip.

Adoption Process:
- Please fill out our adoption application: https://www.dayofthedogs.org/adoption-application
- One of our team members will get back to you via phone.
- Our dogs can be seen by appointment only. We do not have a facility at this time. Dogs are in foster homes or boarding
- Adoption fee helps to cover transport costs, spay/neuter, initial vaccines, rabies, fecal, initial worming, and microchip.
-We do not place holds on our dogs. Please do not contact us until you are prepared to adopt.
NOTE: We are very good about updating the pet's profiles once adopted. So no need to write us to ask "Is he/she still available?" If the post is up, the dog is still available.

About Us:
Day of the Dogs is a 501c3 nonprofit that is dedicated to helping shelters increase live release. We coordinate 2 - 4 transports per month from TX, OK and AR to NW Indiana/Chicagoland area. We do direct adoptions ourselves out of Dyer, IN area and partner with 12 other rescues and shelters in both IL and IN that are willing to help southern pets in need.
We rely on donations to help fund our ongoing transports. Please donate if you can. Every dollar adds up and we are grateful for any help we can get: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/DayoftheDogs
