Meet Shelby! She is a 1-year old, 55-pound American Staffordshire Terrier female located in Norton, MA. She’s hoping to be adopted before her 2nd birthday which is on April 14th! Shelby is a pretty red head who’s up to date on all her shots including heartworm and flea & tick prevention. She is spayed, house trained, and crate trained. She does perfect in her crate overnight and when left alone.

Shelby enjoys chew bones and sets the record for quickly ripping out the stuffing from her soft toys! She loves her walks and her favorite season is summer when she can run around outdoors and hike. Shelby also loves car rides (#ShelbyGT500) but does get car sick, so travelling on an empty stomach is best for her.

She spends her days sleeping especially in winter, but between naps she loves playing in the snow. Watch out around 4 pm however because that’s when she peps up and gets her zoomies! And she’s smart, too! Shelby understands most basic commands such as sit, stay, leave-it, wait, down, and “in your crate.” She wants you to know that she’s not a fan of rain.

Shelby gets along well with other dogs and likes playing with them. She lives with a chi right now, but prefers dogs her size or larger as she tends to be a little rough with smaller dogs and does not understand the size difference. If she does go to a home with other dogs she should eat her meals and treats alone.

Shelby is being rehomed because she is too anxious around small children. Her current family has an active 5-year old who just wants to play, but Shelby prefers her personal space and quiet time. She is great with adults, but the little ones are overwhelming! Therefore, Shelby would do best in a family without small children, respectful kids 12 and up are a better match.

Though nervous at times, Shelby now has a calmer outlook on life since taking prescription medication. This should be continued at least for a few months until she is adjusted to a new home, though there’s no guarantee how long meds will be needed. ARK trainer and friend Maura Porter of Clear Skies Training has worked with Shelby and agrees she’s a good all-around dog but one that’s not suited for young kids.

Shelby has one nipping incident in her otherwise loving nature. Last year, Shelby had a growth removed, which required her to wear the cone of shame for two months. When her current mom leaned into the cone for a kiss, Shelby became startled and nipped. Lesson learned, no kissing a dog in a cone! Otherwise she has been nothing sweet.
