Scout's Story

Looking for a loving, stable new home for this 2½-year-old purebred Mini Australian Shepherd, who weighs approximately 25–30 pounds. He is healthy, fully up to date on all vaccinations, and an incredibly affectionate, cuddly dog who forms strong bonds with his people and loves being close to them. While he enjoys daily walks and runs, he is not overly high-energy like many dogs of his breed and is just as content relaxing around the house. He is a wonderful family dog who is very loyal and protective of those he loves, making him best suited for a calm, stable home environment.

At home, he has excellent manners and good training foundations. He rings a bell to go outside, was crate trained as a puppy, and now sleeps comfortably on a bed in the bedroom. He is still comfortable going into a crate when needed, particularly for long car rides. He walks very well on a leash and generally comes when called, although he can become distracted if he is chasing something. He will chase a ball, though he does not consistently fetch and return it. He does not show signs of separation anxiety and handles time alone well.

He has made significant improvements with car travel and now does well on drives, though he is not completely relaxed yet. He willingly jumps into the car when it’s time to go and tolerates longer rides without issue. He is generally quiet but will bark when a stranger drives onto the property, after which he settles and does not bark excessively.

In terms of other animals, he does not do well with cats and will chase them, so a cat-free home is required. He has limited interaction with unfamiliar dogs but does very well with our other dog and our in-laws’ dog. When on walks, he shows little interest in passing dogs and remains focused on his handler.

He can be unpredictable around small children and should not be placed in a home with young kids. Due to his protective nature, he should also be supervised around unfamiliar visitors. His ideal home would be an adult-only household or one with older, dog-savvy teens, some space to enjoy, and people who are looking for a loyal, devoted companion rather than a highly social dog.

The goal is to find him a safe, caring forever home where he can continue to feel secure, loved, and included as part of the family. He is a deeply affectionate dog who will thrive with the right people and return that love with unwavering loyalty.

Apply to adopt at palofnorcal.org
