Sassy Sally's Story

Sassy Sally is a wee 5 month old girl who looks like a miniature golden retriever but has a healthy dose of her mother's spaniel characteristics. Her world has recently been turned upside down when she arrived in the Toronto area after leaving her home in the north. Her world up north was most likely small - probably inside her home and maybe a bit of outside time close by the house. Now she is putting on her big girl pants and expanding her world to include car rides, offleash runs, friends, new places, and new people. It's a lot for this 18 lb missy, and that's what foster families are all about - introducing littles like Sassy Sally to a brave new world. And she's kicking it!

Sassy Sally has fine features and is expected to stay under 40 pounds at full size. Her full on happy, and sometimes cheeky, personality is showing more each day as she gets more comfortable following the lead of her foster siblings. She now enjoys going for walks with the others, running and playing in the fields, having consistent meals, and snuggling up in her cozy crate.

Sally is just a baby and with that in mind, she is right on track with her decompression. Her priority is to find safety and the person who provides it, and then stick to that person. Right now she does not like to be separated from her foster mum which is normal. Over time she will learn that she and her foster mum can be apart and she's still safe. Sally finally found her voice and she uses it to express herself which is usually when she is behind a barrier like a gate or in the yard when she wants to come in. She also likes to put her two feet up to get as close to you as possible and she will sneak up on your lap if you're willing. What Sassy loves the absolute most is being patted. Gentle full body pats from her silky ears to her tail. This is absolute heaven to her and she will lean in, close her eyes, and hum with contentment.

Sassy Sally is doing well with housetraining and she will continue to work on that as well on building self confidence in new situations, leash walking, crate training and general manners. This energetic girl would do fabulous with another playful dog because she is a primo playmate. She can play hard and be vocal so a compatible housemate is a must. If there is no other dog in her house, Sassy will need dog friend time as there is no greater puppy teacher than another dog. Sassy's serotonin levels also rise with playtime and a tired puppy is a happy family.

Sassy's best home is one with puppy experience that includes a boatload of patience. Let's be real - puppies are a ton of work and the objective is to support and provide the ideal environment for each puppy so that they develop into the best and happiest version of themselves. Sassy will need someone who is home more often than not to provide the guidance and support she deserves. Puppies will make questionable decisions if left to their own devices and leaving Sassy in a crate is not an option. Number one, crates are a tool not a lifestyle and number two, Sassy Sally will use her voice to explain just how downright unacceptable it is.

It's no doubt that Sassy Sally's miniature golden looks are enticing so if you are someone who's dog has been asking for a friend, if you use positive reinforcement training, if you have gentle children over 12 (younger ones will not enjoy her sharp baby teeth or nails), if you are active and fun, and if you are committed to doing right by such an adoring little waif, fill out the adoption application below. There is no doubt that Sassy Sally is going to be very popular!

Sassy Sally is spayed, dewormed, microchipped and vaccinated (DAPP and rabies). Her adoption fee is $850.

Adoption process includes application, virtual home visit, phone interview, reference check, meet & greet, adoption contract and $850 adoption fee.

***Fill out the ADOPTION APPLICATION at:
https://signup.ifaw.org/en-ca/northern-dogs-adoption-application-form

(Copy the link above into your browser).

Northern Dogs Project's Adoption Policy
Northern dogs are not a breed but a lifestyle. Until recently most dogs were free roaming but communities are now making changes to how they want to coexist with dogs and many are now tying. Dogs are all identified by Animal Care and are adopted to families in the south as family members only. Northern dogs are smart, experienced, dog social, have been handled by kids, feel safe with women, and are slightly unsure of men at first. Dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated (core vaccines DAPP and rabies), microchipped and dewormed.
