Sarah Bernhardt (memorial post)'s Story

UPDATE ON Sarah Bernhardt- in honor of Sarah we will keep her profile open until Oct 23 2026, she had so many followers here on Petfinder and on Facebook. We sincerely appreciate those of you sent in donations towards her care. She was wonderful.

Her memorial on facebook:

Not forgotten if loved
Until we meet again - Sarah Bernhardt
2010-2026
Some souls arrive in our lives already carrying the weight of the world, and somehow they still teach us about love, trust, and the beauty of simply being alive.
Not everyone knows how Sarah came into the care of The Fauna Foundation, yet everyone who has seen her photos has been touched by her.
Sarah Bernhardt was found at 5:30 in the morning, walking in circles in the middle of the street in front of an animal shelter. We can only imagine that this tiny senior girl had been abandoned and left to fend for herself. I always make up a story, in Sarah's story- she had been deeply loved and her person passed, nobody was left to care for her , they left her behind.
Thankfully, the person who found her in the dusty morning light was connected to the rescue community and knew she needed help. Sarah was brought into safety — and what we discovered was heartbreaking. She was deaf, almost blind from years of untreated eye issues, unable to eat anything but baby food due to her infected mouth and bad teeth, missing fur along her back, and clearly a little dog whose needs had gone unseen for far too long.
But Sarahs story was not going to end there. The best life was about to happen.
She was surrounded by people who SAW HER. Who cared. Who said: this little granny matters.
She went through countless veterinary visits and received care for her many challenges — a heart murmur, neurological issues, kidney disease, severe dental problems, and eyes that sadly could not be repaired.
Once she was stable, Sarah went to a forever foster home — the kind of place every senior animal deserves.
A home in the hills above Malibu filled with love. A place where she could wake up from a nap on soft green grass, sniff the morning dew, feel the warmth of the sun on her face, and know she was safe.
AND her wardrobe...how cute was she in many outfits!
She had big dog and little dog friends. She visited chickens and pigs. Cat friends too, including a little CH kitty. She went on tractor rides and car rides to the beach. She experienced the oys that every dog should know.
And despite everything her tiny body endured, Sarah remained the sweetest, bravest little soul. She never stopped showing gratitude. She never stopped loving. She reminded everyone around her that a life is measured not only by its length, but by the love it holds.
Over time, the conditions she carried began to weaken her little body. One of the hardest gifts we give our animals is knowing when it is time to let them go peacefully — when we must put their comfort above our desire to keep them here.
Together, her fosters and veterinary care team made the loving decision to help Sarah dream one final dream.
Sarah Bernhardt passed peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved her.
Sarah, because of you, we learned.
Because of you, we grew.
Because of you, we loved.
Run free, sweet granny girl. You were cherished.

This is Sarah.
Found wandering the streets.
Deaf.
Blind.
Yet brave.
Yet steady in spirit.
May love surround Sarah.
May healing find her.
May all of our supporters know goodness exists. We've had full bloodwork run, teeth extracted and sadly an eye enucleation was necessary...and yet she has such a strong will to live, she is getting stronger daily. Sarah would be a special needs adoption. She loves to go outside-supervised only, sniff grass , raise her face to the sun. Interested in giving a senior a safe, loving home, email us: thefaunafoundation@yahoo.com. Include your phone number and email address. Not able to adopt at this time, Sarah would love to have some sponsors-her wardrobe is slim-she loves to dress up!

The Fauna Foundation's Adoption Policy
Currently, we have many kittens and several adults available for adoption. Our adoptables may change frequently so please check back to find your perfect match. Due to the special care we give all of our adoptable animals we will require a pre-adoption form to be filled out and submitted. The pre-adoption is merely informational , it doesn't require you to adopt NOR does it mean the animal your interested in would be the best animal for you. Once we've received the pre-adoption form we can set up a meet and greet with the animal(s) you're interested in. Normally we might require a home-check, although due to the pandemic we are willing to make other arrangements such as a facetime, video or photo virtual home check. We do request an adoption donation. In general kittens and cats are $150-$175 and up. Dogs in general are $250 and up Other animals vary. Sometimes an animal will have a sponsor so the adoption fee might be lower. In Oct/Nov we typically will lower our senior cat adoption donation. Special needs animals have varying suggested donation amounts requested-however we might provide medication, food, special beds, etc to help get those SPECIAL animals into homes. Some of our animals have "fairy godmothers" who crochet blankets, or provide beds, toys, litter , boxes or carriers for the animal to take with them to their new home. Every animal goes to their new home with a small supply of their current food. All of our animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. Our relationship with the animal doesn't end once they are in your home. We will be here for you to answer questions, give suggestions and offer up any assistance you might need now or in the future for the well being of your pet. You and the pet will be forever part of our family. The Fauna Foundation is located in the hills of Malibu. Many of our adoptable kittens and cats are in foster homes, however we do have adoptable cats at the sanctuary. All visits must be pre-arranged. We aren't set up to accommodate drop in visitors.
