Sammy's Story

Hi, I'm Sammy, a five year old Great Dane with movie star looks and the softest soul. I'm a big, handsome guy in a black and white tuxedo, but underneath all that size I'm really just a sweetheart who wants to be close to my people. I love riding in the car, I load myself right up, and I'm such a good passenger that you may forget there's a giant dog along for the trip. At home, I'm the kind of boy who looks very happy stretched across the couch, soaking up the comfort and keeping you company.

Life has certainly taken a turn for the better since I came into rescue. My former owners were not able to care for me properly so I was very underweight when I was surrendered. Also, like many Danes, my "happy tail" wagged itself into lots of accidental injuries that bothered me a lot, so the good shelter folks decided that amputation was the best choice for this problem. Boy, am I glad to have that feel better and am doing great.

I've been living in a home while I recover, and I've shown everyone what a nice boy I am. I'm crate trained, housebroken, walk nicely on leash, and even know some basic commands. I've done well with adults, the college-age kids I met in my foster home, other dogs, and cats. Around food, I can get a little concerned if other animals come too close since food may not have been available to me as much as I would have liked in the past, so my people simply keep an eye on me and give me some space at mealtime. I have not shown any aggression, and I respond well to voice redirection and guidance.

I'm still filling back out and would benefit from a steady routine and good meals. Another fifteen pounds or more would be just about right for me. I'd love a family that understands I have a little anxiety about being left behind again. I do best as a family dog, and I'm happiest when I can be part of the day instead of off on my own. Keep me busy, give me love, and I will give you my whole heart. I'm smart, mannerly, affectionate, and so easy to fall for. If you've been hoping for a gentle giant who wants to be your loyal shadow, I just might be your Sammy.

Sammy's adoption fee is $275.
