Salt's Story

Date Written: 1/2026 and updated 5/11/2026
Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound mix
Age: 9 months
Weight: 40 lbs

Meet Salt!

Before coming to B&B, Salt was dumped by her owners and left outside with little to no human contact for over a month as just a young, scared pup. Despite that, she is very loving and will lay against her foster, or rest her head in your lap. She likes to be close to people, although she can still be a little hesitant with touch. After some time working on it, Salt is getting better with touch and lets her foster freely pet and rough house with her. She also loves to lay her head on your head when she sleeps at night! She may be hesitant with a new person, but she will get over that hurdle once she feel safe. She loves to lick your fingers and will always take a treat out of your hand! If she's hesitant, she simply backs herself away and finds her safety zone. She will follow you around the entire yard and house - she's very curious!

Salt has completed a board and train program to help build her confidence. She will come with trainer support to ensure she stays on the right track. She is currently working on getting comfortable with leash walking! She knows how to sit and is working on learning additional commands!

She does great with all other dogs and doesn't chase cats, and seems to have minimal to no prey drive. She is being fostered in a home with free-roaming chickens directly on the other side of the fence, and she pays no attention to them. She is potty and crate trained, and food is her biggest motivator. She is not a barker and is very quiet.

While she has adjusted very well in her current home, there may be some regression when she moves to a new environment and she likely will be shut down at first. She will need an adopter willing to give her the patience she needs upfront while she adjusts and learns to trust someone new. Because of this, she will need a home with a fenced-in yard so she can adjust at her own pace and not be forced to walk on a leash, which may be scary for her right now. She also will need another confident dog in the home. Nothing helps a dog build confidence faster than another dog to show them everything is okay! She would do well with older kids that would not chase her or push boundaries.

We offer adoption trials for all of our dogs with no commitment to give them time to adjust. Salt is being fostered in Chester, VA. She is up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations and monthly preventatives. Her adoption fee is $375 and covers the cost of age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip, and her upcoming spay. We require that all adopters, regardless of the dog’s age, are committed to ongoing training and socialization as part of responsible ownership. To apply to adopt Salt, visit www.beaglesandbentleys.org/adopt.

Spay/Neuter Disclosure:
Spay/Neuter will be scheduled when age-appropriate and is covered in the adoption fee. We require adopters to be within a reasonable distance of Richmond or Virginia Beach in order to complete spay/neuter with our approved clinics.

Note: Sending a Petfinder inquiry is not submitting an application. We require a completed adoption application to move forward with adoption.

Beagles and Bentleys has an across-the-board evaluative process that we apply to every application we review that prioritizes our animals in need. We conduct a vet reference check (all resident dogs must be altered/up to date on dhpp/rabies and monthly preventatives) and a virtual home visit call where we discuss the adoption process and see your home.
