Please only apply if your home ticks ALL of these boxes:<br/>• [ ] A confident, friendly resident dog (Sadie cannot be an only dog; she relies on other dogs to feel safe).<br/>• [ ] A physically fenced, secure yard attached to the home. (No apartments, no condos, no tie-outs, no invisible fences).<br/>• [ ] Homebodies only. (No camping, cottages, RVing, hiking, or frequent road trips. Sadie is a severe flight risk).<br/>• [ ] Adults-only home. (A quiet environment with no children, teenagers, or high-volume visitor traffic).<br/>• [ ] Prior experience rehabbing mills/breeding dogs or extreme fear.<br/>Applications missing even one of these criteria will be automatically declined.<br/><br/>Why we do not make exceptions:<br/>Many times when we post a mill-surrender, people ask for an exception. We do not make choices for these animals on a whim—they are based on years of rescue experience and nearly two years of daily observation in her specialized foster home. A home with too much movement, no companion dog, or an un-fenced yard will set her back years and risk her life. We love Sadie too much to set her up for failure.<br/><br/>The Reality of Sadie's Mill-Dog Trauma:<br/>Sadie, a Shih Tzu mix born January 24, 2020, came to us on July 5, 2023. She spent her entire early life in a high-walled breeding box where she could only see walls, a ceiling, and a floor. She ate, slept, and went to the bathroom in that exact same spot.<br/>Because of this history, she did not have a normal upbringing:<br/>• She is not house-trained. She does not have the natural urge to keep a home clean. House-training a former breeding dog takes immense patience, strict routines, and a lot of cleaning supplies.<br/>• The outside world terrifies her. Taking her to a cottage, camping, or a patio isn't "fun" for her—it triggers a blind panic where her only instinct is to slip her harness, bolt, and run. She needs a secure yard so she does not back out of a collar or harness and get hit by a vehicle. Routine is her only friend.<br/>• She is not a dog you can show off to friends. She will not greet you at the door. She may hide under furniture for the first few weeks, panics at sudden movements, and thinks a dropped spoon or a vacuum is a life-threatening danger.<br/><br/>Progress & Current Foster Life:<br/>Sadie is currently in London, ON, with a foster caregiver who specializes in rehabbing former breeding dogs. She is a true work in progress. When she arrived, she didn't know what a leash or collar was. It took nearly two years of wearing a leash inside the house just to get Sadie to accept being led to the backyard without feeling cornered and trying to bolt. Today, she finally does very well going outside on a leash into her securely fenced yard.<br/>She does incredibly well with other dogs to cuddle with and is also used to cats in her foster home. In fact, the newbies who come into her foster home always love her. Because her favorite place to be is with other dogs for comfort and companionship, she absolutely requires a home with another dog. She needs dog-savvy adults capable of reading canine body language, allowing her to learn to trust without experiencing setbacks.<br/>Medical and Adoption Info:<br/>We have taken care of all her veterinary needs. She was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped on intake, and has been groomed regularly since. She had a dental on April 15, 2025, and her most recent annual check-up was on May 11, 2026. Her adoption fee is actually less than the cost of her dental surgery alone.<br/>Before you apply, ask yourself:<br/>1. Are you okay with a dog that might not let you pet her for weeks or months?<br/>2. Are you willing to walk her on a leash inside your own home if she regresses and is too afraid to go to the backyard?<br/>3. Is your resident dog genuinely welcoming, patient, and willing to mentor a highly fearful dog?<br/>4. Are you content with a dog who finds her absolute greatest joy in a quiet routine that never changes?<br/>Sadie won't suit the vast majority of lifestyles, but we are confident she will continue to evolve in the proper, patient environment.
