Meet Ruby June
You see, Ruby has had a tough time for most of her life. We originally got her as a young, owner surrender without much information about her at all other than she was being kept outside. Otherwise, we knew her to be active, fun-loving, and consistent to her breed.
Â
She was adopted fairly quickly and had a family for about a year, half of which she began having medical issues. Her family either ran out of funding or patience, or both, but she did not receive a diagnosis and when she was returned to us, she was extremely underweight and just not the Ruby June we knew before.
This is where the long haul got a bit longer. After much (and we mean MUCH) testing, it was determined that she had a form of pancreatitis (EPI). Now that we finally had a diagnosis, next was a game plan for treatment. Getting her system regulated was a long, l-o-n-g process of trial and error with many iterations of medications and diet.
The future is finally here and Ruby June has now regained all of her weight and her gastric system functions as it should! But…there’s always a but…she is special-needs and always will be. However, her special requirements are really not that big of a deal! She can only ever have her specialized food, and she cannot be in a home with free-feeding of any other pet. Her main medication is a powder sprinkled on her meals and she must take several vitamins to replace nutrients that her system is unable to absorb naturally. Food and meds aren’t cheap but we are offering to financially support her prescription food and medication sprinkles for anyone that would agree to foster or adopt her.
Throughout all of this, Ruby June developed some lameness in her hind end that is treated with joint supplements for now. The vet doesn’t feel that she’s a surgical candidate at this time. We believe that a slight increase in activity and mobility will yield good results for her atrophy. She will never catch frisbees or go hunting, but she may one day stroll a sleepy neighborhood by your side.
With her lush coat of black/brown tracings and chestnut colored eyes, long snout and folded ears, she is a good looking dog! She weighs in at 76 pounds but she does not crash around like a bull in a China shop. She is aware of her size and behaves accordingly.
We’ve been in rescue for a while and have seen a few hard-cases. Ruby really is not that! She has endured more than anyone ever should, but remains the most sweet and loving dog. She will make someone special very lucky to have such an amazing friend and all she asks for in return is a little attention, a little exercise, and a special diet. That’s it! And we’re here to help with the last bit.
Ruby June is so deserving of a loving home and family. She is great with kids, other dogs, and even cats. She is not demanding, not intrusive, not a trouble maker by any stretch. She is a loyal, loving, and gentle soul who is happy in spite of yesterday.
We would love nothing more than to see follow-up, happily ever after photos of her lounging around on her own comfy bed or sitting next to her person on the porch during Autumn. That’s the life she’s made for so please help us get Ruby out of boarding and into a home! We will do everything we can to help you provide her with the love she deserves!
