Hello! My name is Ruby. I’m a very sweet and very shy 5-year-old female Shih Tzu. I have beautiful coloring and I weigh a healthy 11 pounds. I came to the rescue from a puppy mill, which was very harsh, isolated and lonely. I’m still learning about the real world and everything in it. I’ve bonded closely with my foster mom, but I’m very cautious around other people. When I arrived in rescue, I had an eye injury, but it has since been treated and healed. I also have a chronic dry eye condition and will need prescription eye drops twice a day for the rest of my life. I love going outside, and potty training is going very well - although I haven’t quite adjusted to being on a leash. My favorite things are hanging out with my foster mom in her office or on the couch. I love bedtime - my tail wags and I get excited to be on the bed with my favorite blanket. I hope I can find a quiet home with patient, loving people who can continue to support me on my healing journey. My new family must meet the following requirements:

1. My new family must be experienced with dogs (ideally rescues) and commit to using positive reinforcement training methods, which may include seeking professional training, if necessary.
2. Be willing and financially able to care for my ongoing health needs (i.e. regular vet visits) and administer eye drops twice daily.
3. Must live within 30 miles of Plymouth, MN, so my foster parents can do a follow-up home visit.
4. I need a home where my people are around most of the time and will provide a positive, supportive environment. I can’t be left alone for long periods of time.
5. I can share a home with other non-dominant small dogs and friendly cats.
6. Be physically able to lift me on/off furniture and up/down stairs. I don’t know how to go up and down stairs, so I need to go to a one-level home or one where there are very few stairs.
7. Maintain my high quality dog-food diet (no human food). Sometimes it’s tough getting me to eat and drink - my foster mom can give you some tips.
8. I will run away when outside, so I require a secure, fenced-in yard or will need to always be on a leash when outside. It’s best to secure the leash before you even open the door.
9. I am intimidated and wary of people both big and small, so only a quiet home with no young children will be considered.
10. Agree to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year.

Ruby is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $320.00 plus $24.08 sales tax for a total of $344.08.

The foster parent will discuss the home visit procedures with the applicant(s) once they are approved for that step of the adoption process.
