ROXY's Story

Meet Roxy, the white pittie mix puppy. Roxy arrived to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She was described by her previous guardian as playful. Typical to a puppy her age, Roxy is still working on potty training. Adopters should plan to have time, patience and some yummy treats and/or fun toys to engage in rewards based training to bond and teach Roxy life skills and manners. Shelter staff have observed that Roxy may have some hearing impairment. She does not seem to be as responsive to sounds compared to the average puppy her age. Adopters should do some research on caring for a dog with hearing impairment prior to adoption to ensure they have the information and tools to succeed. Roxy may do well in a home with other animals. If there are dogs in the home, they should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Any other species of animals should be introduced in a slow, thoughtful manner in the home. Roxy has spent some time in a foster home recently. Her foster reports: Roxy is a 4-month-old Pit Bull mix with a heart as big as her puppy energy! This happy, wiggly girl is always ready for her next adventure, whether that's romping around with her dog friends or soaking up all the love from her favorite humans. Roxy has a hearing impairment, but don't let that fool you—she doesn't let it slow her down one bit. She's a smart, resilient puppy who is learning how to navigate the world with the help of her people. Since she can't hear someone approaching, she responds really well to vibrations. A gentle tap on the floor near her lets her know you're coming, and if she's in a deep sleep, a soft touch is all it takes. She usually wakes up with a full-body wiggle and excitement, ready to start her day. Like any puppy, Roxy is still learning, and because of her hearing impairment she naturally looks to her humans for guidance and reassurance. She thrives with clear communication, consistency, and positive reinforcement. The good news? She is incredibly food motivated, making training both fun and rewarding. With patience and continued guidance, Roxy has all the potential to become an amazing lifelong companion. Roxy absolutely loves other dogs and would do best with canine friends who enjoy an energetic puppy play style and can help teach her good social skills. She also adores people and simply wants to be close to them. Right now, she's working through some separation anxiety—sometimes even finding it hard when she can't be touching her humans. Like many puppies, this is something she's learning to overcome with patience, routine, and positive experiences. One of Roxy's biggest challenges is that she loves life so much that she doesn't want to miss a thing! If people or other animals are around, she would happily stay awake just to be part of the action. Because growing puppies need lots of quality sleep, Roxy does best when she's given a quiet space or her crate for naps. Once she's settled and asleep, her hearing impairment actually works in her favor—she isn't disturbed by people moving around the house and is able to get the restful sleep she needs. Roxy is also doing an excellent job with potty training and continues to impress with how quickly she learns. She does have a big voice and isn't afraid to use it, especially when she's excited or wants to let you know how she's feeling, so her future family should be ready for a chatty girl with plenty of personality! Roxy is looking for a home that will embrace her hearing impairment as just one small part of who she is. She's not defined by what she can't hear—she's defined by her joyful spirit, endless enthusiasm, and unwavering love for her people. She'll thrive with a family that can provide structure, continued training, and lots of love while she grows into the incredible dog she's meant to be. If you're looking for a playful, affectionate, and incredibly special puppy who will keep you smiling every single day, Roxy is ready to steal your heart. Roxy is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. Roxy's adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter Foundation's Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
