Meet Rolf.<br/>Rolf is a 6–7 year old, 26-pound chocolate dachshund with the shiniest red-brown coat and the gentlest soul. He came from the heartbreaking hoarding case involving 36 dogs living in awful conditions, and while he is safe now, it is clear that Rolf is still learning what it means to fully trust and simply be loved.<br/>He is such a sweet boy.<br/>Rolf is shy and curious all at once. He wants to be close. He wants affection. He wants to trust. You can see it in everything he does. He may not always take the initiative to climb into your lap, but he is more than happy to snuggle beside you in a dog bed or nestle into a big pile of blankets on the floor. And when he wants a little extra love, he will quietly come over and rest his head on your lap in the sweetest way.<br/>Rolf loves other dogs and does wonderfully with everyone from big 66-pound pit bulls to little 16-week-old puppies. He enjoys playing in the yard, rolling around with his brothers, and then settling down with a good chew bone. He is interested in toys like balls and seems like he wants to join in — he is just still figuring it all out. Underneath his caution, you can clearly see that classic dachshund playfulness waiting to fully bloom. When he bounces around with the other dogs, you catch a glimpse of the carefree little dog he is becoming.<br/>He has been doing well in foster care. He is clean in his crate and does well both at night and during the day when needed. He is also doing well going outside to potty. He eats well in a group, has been gaining weight on Purina dog food, and does fine with a low fence.<br/>Rolf is good with kids, teens, and women. Men still make him a little unsure, but he is making progress and has realized the men around him might come with treats, which has definitely helped. He enjoys being petted and is opening up more every single day, which makes it easy to believe that with patience and love, he will continue to grow in confidence.<br/>He also does well on a leash and does not pull, though if he gets scared, he will flatten himself to the ground and refuse to move. It is not stubbornness — it is fear — and it is just another reminder that Rolf is still learning that the world can be kind.<br/>His brief meeting with cats went well. He was curious and gently tried to play, but when the cats made it clear they were not interested, Rolf simply found a pile of blankets and laid down instead.<br/>Rolf is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations and preventions, and ready for a home that will give him the time and tenderness he deserves.<br/>He is one of those dogs who quietly works his way into your heart. He does not demand attention. He does not make a fuss. He just stands there, sweet and hopeful, wanting so badly to love and trust. Like the rest of the dogs from this case, Rolf is proof that even after hardship, a dog can still choose softness.<br/>Rolf does not need perfection.
