Rocky Niño's Story
Meet Rocky Niño (aka “El Niño”)! Rocky is a young male just over 1 year old, and we guess his mix to be Lab / Whippet.

ROCKY IS IN CHICAGO AND AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION IN THE GREATER SURROUNDING AREAS INCLUDING WISCONSIN!

Rescued in Tulum Mexico, June of 2023, Rocky spent his entire puppyhood tied up, mostly alone, hungry, and surviving a horrible injury on his own. Despite being neglected and facing hardships in the past, Rocky’s spirit is unbroken and he now thrives in love and companionship. Rocky continues to work on some ‘street dog’ traits like leash walking when other dogs are near and "new dog or person in the house alert!!". That said, he is a very clever guy and just needs more training and socialization. In Tulum, he was so overflowing with happiness at having 20 other doggy playmates and a home, sometimes he would just burst with joy and doesn't know how to express it, so he makes some cute and (if he's locked outside) dramatic noises and cries. He is like a young boy who lived in a room alone, then suddenly got exposed to a loving house with lots of playmates and has a lust for life ?

In August, Rocky got the opportunity to fly to Chicago and is with one of our partner rescues there, One Tail at a Time, in hopes for adoption by a compatible person or family. He is currently being lovingly fostered with three other dogs. His best friend in the home is the dog of similar size to him, and they get along grandly! He is learning not to be a resource guard, especially with the smaller dogs. He can be a little too rough with the smaller pups in the home, so his foster mom is working on this.

Rocky will thrive in a medium-active lifestyle with a person/family who want to continue to enhance his intelligence with positive-reinforcement training. He’d love a doggy playmate who is tolerant of puppy-ish behavior, and would love a yard! His ideal forever home will have a playful dog his size or larger, or even a dominant smaller dog who likes to rough and tumble.

Attributes: Dog and people friendly after a proper meeting. He is likely kid friendly after a meet and greet but has not been exposed to many children since moving to Chicago, and we would prefer a home (if there are children) that they are over 10 years old and dog savvy. Loves to play, run and fetch, and then will be the cutest cuddler and will want to cozy up right next to you (or on top of you). He has some leash reactivity to other dogs, but can be redirected with high value treats (and is small enough to easily pull away and go another direction). Spent a lot of time being hungry on the streets, so he can be "overzealous" at dinner time and should be separated at feeding time from his new doggy brother/sister until they establish their relationship. He is intelligent and knows how to sit, stay, lay, paw and spin and continues to learn more from his foster mom. He’s also great at agility courses!

He makes this funny play growl noise and talks a lot (like Huskies do) which is not aggressive, though some dogs are put off by it and others will jump right into his weirdo world of play time and become best friends right away!

Rocky Nino is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, microchipped and heartworm negative.

If you'd like to meet this dreamboat pup, please contact us so that we can answer questions, set up a convo, share more info, etc. We will then direct you to where you can submit an application on the One Tail at a Time website if it seems like a perfect fit for everyone!
