Rocky's Story

Rocky is a young, sweet doxie who is truly thriving in a calm, supportive environment and is ready to find his forever home. He came to RMDR suffering from separation anxiety, but has already made amazing strides.

He does best with another confident dog in the home, as he looks to his canine friends for guidance and comfort. Having a dog buddy helps him relax, settle, and feel secure — it’s an important part of what will make him mesh with his new family.

Rocky loves daily walks and sniffy adventures and would be happiest with a family who enjoys getting outside with him. He’s food-motivated and eager to learn, making him very trainable, especially for improving leash manners. He can have a bit of little dog ego at times on the leash — more enthusiastic than anything — and responds well to gentle guidance if he starts to act tough.

Rocky cannot be crated or confined, as this is very triggering for him. He needs to be trusted to have free rein when his family is away. Thankfully, he’s doing great with potty training and can be trusted in the home as long as absences are reasonable. A home where people are around most of the time (WFH is ideal) is best, with typical time away kept to about 4 hours or less.

His anxiety is minimal when people are home, and his vet has shared that his future family may consider gradually lowering or weaning him off his current anxiety medication if he continues to do well.

Rocky does bark, so a home without shared walls would be ideal. He’s wonderful with kids but thrives in a lower-energy household, so a home without small children would be the best fit. He also rides well in the car and enjoys outings.

Rocky is very curious about cats, and while not aggressive, his excitement could be overwhelming for them. A cat-free home (or a very confident, dog-savvy cat) would be ideal.

Rocky is a loving, loyal little guy who just needs the right environment to keep shining. With a canine companion, steady routines, help from his humans with confidence-building, and lots of love, he’ll make a truly special addition to the right family.

Rocky is currently being fostered in Colorado.

Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue (RMDR) has foster families in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. Please check the dog’s location before your apply to adopt them. You will need to pick them up. RMDR DOES NOT TRANSPORT THE DOG TO YOU or transport them across state lines.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture requires that all dogs entering PACFA-licensed facilities have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry. Dogs over three months of age must also have proof of a current rabies vaccination, including the vaccination date, manufacturer, and serial number listed on the CVI. Puppies must receive parvovirus and distemper vaccinations at least 14 days before entry.

These PACFA requirements may affect the adoption fee. For questions, please email us at contact@rmdr.org.

At RMDR, adoptions are not first-come, first-served—we carefully place each dog in the home that best fits their needs. Applications are usually reviewed within 48 hours. Every RMDR dog is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations.

If you’d like to be considered, please start our online adoption application here: https://rockymountaindachshundrescue.com/adopt
