River's Story

Meet River! If you're looking for a dog who lives life to the fullest, River is ready to make a splash! This fun-loving 2-year-old has never met a pool, hose, or kiddie pool she didn't love. Whether she's wading through the water, chasing a tennis ball, or carrying one back to you for another throw, River is happiest when she's outside having fun with her favorite people.

River is an energetic girl with a playful spirit and a sweet personality that shines through once she's out exploring. Volunteers describe her as a "little powerhouse" who loves fetch, tug-of-war, and splashing around. She's eager to interact, enjoys learning, and is happiest when she has a toy in her mouth. Big rubber toys are another favorite, and she'll proudly carry them around or invite you to play.

On walks, River starts out enthusiastic and can pull at first, but many volunteers have noticed she settles in as the walk continues. She enjoys sniffing the trails, taking breaks to explore, and then heading back for another game of fetch. After all the fun, she's just as happy to soak up praise and spend time with her people.

If you're searching for an active companion who will keep you smiling, River is ready to dive into her next adventure—with you.

River at a Glance

Age: 2 years old
Favorite Activities: Swimming, playing fetch, tug-of-war, carrying big rubber toys, exploring trails, and splashing in the pool
Training: Knows "sit," is treat-motivated, and walks improve as she settles into the outing
Personality: Playful, energetic, affectionate, enthusiastic, and incredibly sweet

See more of River's personality, charm, and everyday moments here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1YOEI0eqx9YQVDYP5_PoEuRFBf7N7FzC

SPCA of Southwest Michigan's Adoption Policy
We have same day adoptions! You are welcome to visit our shelter anytime during our open hours. When you visit, you can either look through the kennel first or go into a meet and greet room with an available animal of interest. In the meet and greet room, we will let you spend time with the animal and read off their file. If you have a dog at home, you can bring them along with you to do a dog-to-dog meet and greet. The main question we ask is if you own or rent your home. If you rent we check your pet policy. Bring your pet policy with you; as that is the quickest way for us to check. Once that clears, all you would need to do is fill out an adoption contract and pay their adoption fee. They would go home with you after that! If you are adopting a cat, you are welcome to bring your own carrier with you. We do have carriers to borrow or cardboard boxes to send home with you if you do not have one. If you are adopting a dog, you are welcome to bring your own leash and collar. We do have leashes and collars to send home with you as well. Holds We offer holds over the phone and in-person. The hold fee is $50 and is non-refundable. Holds over the phone are for 24 hours and holds in-person are for 48 hours.
