Rio (FOSTER NEEDED! EDMONTON, AB)'s Story

Special Foster Home Needed for Rio – Edmonton Area Only

NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION -- Although our foster homes generally get the first right of refusal when their foster dog is ready for adoption, Rio needs further assessment and training before he will be available.

PLEASE READ ENTIRE PROFILE! Unfortunately, applications that do not meet the criteria listed below, will not be responded to.

Rio has lived in the same home since he was a puppy, and when his owner got cancer, his world was turned upside down. He was placed in a foster home briefly, but after just one night he was returned. We don't want to put him back in a boarding kennel, so we hope that someone can help!

What Rio needs right now is time and space to decompress in a calm, predictable home.

He is a friendly and social boy, generally not reactive, walks well on a head collar, and is well behaved in the home.

Here's the honest part (and also the hopeful part)...

Rio sometimes shows stress by growling and barking at the people around him, similar to a person who may lash out at their significant other when they have had a bad day or are feeling overwhelmed. Aggression does not always mean a dog wants to inflict harm, but it is how they communicate fear, anxiety, and discomfort. In Rio's case, as long as people respect his signals and give him space when needed, he generally does not escalate beyond these initial warnings.

Because of this, we are looking for a foster who:
Is not fearful of canine communication, including growling and barking
Understands that aggression ≠ “bad dog”
Will not threaten, punish, or try to dominate him (“Alphas” need not apply)
Believes in compassion, patience, and letting a dog feel safe
Can calmly back off when Rio says “I need space”
Will follow a training plan provided by the rescue, including maintenance of consistent boundaries
Lives within 1-1/2 hours of Edmonton

Rio is good with other dogs and may do best with:
A small dog, or
A large, calm female dog

An adult-only home is required. Rio was not exposed to cats in his previous home, so a home without cats is best as he likes to bark at them.

With the right foster, someone steady, kind, and experienced, Rio will have a chance to relax and show who he really is once he feels secure.

If you feel that you might be that person, or if you want to learn more before deciding, please reach out.

Sometimes the dogs who need us most are the ones who are simply asking us to listen.

Rio is a CKC registered purebred. Although we contacted the breeder, they declined to take him back.

Please read through our position statements and apply to foster Rio at adoptadobe.com/foster-application.

Donate toward Rio's care
adoptadobe.com/donate
e-transfer to info@adoptadobe.com

Adopt-a-Dobe Rescue Society's Adoption Policy
Our goal as a rescue is to match each dog with the most suitable home possible. In our opinion, the success of a rescue is based on the quality of its adoptions, not the quantity. Adopting a pet can mean a commitment of more than a decade, and we believe our adoption process reflects that. 1. ADOPTION APPLICATION Our adoption application provides us with general information about your family, your lifestyle, and your dog experience, which allows us to qualify potential adoption matches. You may apply for a specific dog or submit a general application for us to keep on file for future intakes. 2. HOME VISIT Once your application has been approved, we will contact you to set up a visit at your home. The purpose of this visit is to meet all family members and current pets, and to make sure the environment is Doberman-ready. In some circumstances, this may be done virtually. We will often combine the home visit with the meet & greet, depending on logistics. 3. MEET & GREET We require a meet & greet between the adoptable dog and all household members and their current dogs, before an adoption can be finalized. We will not ship dogs to adopters. We will adopt out of the area, as long as adopters can meet this requirement. Meet & greets may take place at the applicant’s home, the foster home, or at another mutually agreeable place. 4. ADOPTION & LIFELONG SUPPORT Once an adoption has been approved, all adopters must sign an adoption contract and pay the stated adoption fee. If at any time an adopter cannot keep their dog, we ask that it be returned to us. We will also provide free training support to adopters for the lifetime of their dog.
