Meet Ricky Bobby

Hey everybody, meet Ricky Bobby! This very handsome, 3-year-old boy thinks he is a runway model, and everyone should stop, look, and adore him. He is a bit of an odd guy; he has a couple of quirks, and his previous years may not have been so good to him. Don’t get us wrong, he is definitely a sweetheart, but he is unsure if it is ok to be a sweetheart. He is a talker and a grumbler if he doesn’t get his way. He doesn’t lash out or act out but will let you know if he’s displeased. He’s good around most other dogs but doesn’t care for intact males. Strangely, he’s not much into playing with other dogs. He’s in daycare, but after an initial run, or strut as it may be, he hangs out and observes. He can get bored, and if he doesn’t find something, or someone, to provide some fun, he may try to climb the wall or fence to find it himself. His foster Mom and daycare staff are working on this, and he’s getting better about staying on the ground. Of course, getting more exercise and mental stimulation will help immensely with this behavior. He has been raised with a heavy hand, and quick movements around his head make him cringe. Soft petting and sweet talk are helping him understand that hands are for good, not bad. He came to us with very poor door/gate manners and will try to run past when doors or gates open. He is being trained to stop that bad habit. He came from a home with children, so we know he’s ok with kids, but we are unsure of their ages. We don’t know how he would be around cats or small dogs. We also do not know if he is crate trained as we’ve not needed to crate him. He can and will ask for love and like his humans nearby. He will grumble if he’s being hugged but walk away if he feels uncomfortable. He will give soft kisses upon occasion but frequently backs off as if that kind of love is not allowed. Working on that, too. Having a 6ft fenced-in yard would be optimal, but he could be put on a tie-out as long as he is monitored as he may think to chew through it until he knows he’s safe and home. Another dog would be fine, but it should be a fairly laid-back dog who can match his energy. So, the perfect person or family for Ricky Bobby would be active and enjoy walking/hiking or bike riding so he can release some Husky energy and strut his stuff. Someone to train him to do some tricks or extend his knowledge of basic commands would be great for his mind, which can also be a great release. Someone willing to put in the time to make him the best dog he can be. Someone to let him know he is loved and respected. Could you be his person?

Update: Ricky Bobby does have some quirks we have learned while having him. The handsome ones always do, don’t they? He has a high level of separation anxiety, which took a while to manifest. It started with trying to eat his way out of a fenced area, then progressed to trying to eat his way out of a nice boarding suite. He has no residual issues from his escape attempt, but we did get him to see a vet and started on some daily medicine to help him relax. He also has an extra heavy-duty crate, which he sings in at first but then settles in. His medicine has helped him relax with us and accept pets and love better. We have already weaned down an as-needed medicine in half, so he is making progress. He is also doing better, as expected, with his crate.
