Rayna's Story

Rayna would like to be on the couch with you, and specifically on the part of the couch you are already sitting on.

She is a four year old girl with a blue grey brindle coat, a white chest and four white toes, and a face that gives away everything she is thinking. She is about 65 pounds and carrying a few more than she needs, so somebody is going to get a good walking partner out of this. She is house trained.

She came to us as an owner surrender when the person she belonged to was no longer able to care for her, so we know she has lived in a house and knows how to do it. Four years old means the puppy phase is behind her, and what she wants now is company. She is easy to have around once she knows you, and she is dog friendly, so she does not have to be an only dog. She also thinks a car ride is the best thing that can happen to a day. Any car, any distance, she is in.

A few honest things before you apply. Rayna is watchful the first time she meets someone new, so we are looking for a home where visitors get introduced calmly rather than all at once at the front door. She warms up quickly once that introduction is made. Cats make her nervous and her answer is to leave the room rather than chase, but a home without a cat is the easier fit for her. She has not been around children that we know of, so we cannot tell you how she would do living with them.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
